TFI module
Hi everyone, just wanted to add my input to the posts on the broncos that have been quitting for no apparent reason. My '87 2.9 4WD auto., 302,000 miles, was doing that for a while. Just drive along and with now warning it would die, was like turned the key off. Sometimes would start right back up and other times wouldn't. Even called a tow truck couple of times but wound up cancelling it when after it sat for 10-15 minutes it would start. Was driving me crazy. We had changed the fuel filters and checked into things mentioned in other posts but still was happening. Finally replaced the TFI module but that still didn't solve problem, would happen same as before, sometimes several times in a day, sometimes would go a day or two without it quitting. When I took my '99 Explorer to the dealer for a recall I was talking to the service writer about it and he told me that when they replace the TFI they go ahead and replace the stater (stator?) at the same time. If it is worn, it will send confusing info. to the TFI and the engine will die like I was experiencing. I had them replace the stater assembly and it has been over 2 weeks now and it has not died once! And my fuel economy has picked back up, it was getting really bad gas mileage too. So maybe for you out there that are having a similar problem, it would be worth checking into. The stater assembly from the dealer was around 60 bucks plus labor to install it. I'm finally getting to the point where I trust driving it on the highway again, that could be a little unnerving place for it to die.
