cummins conversion

I'm thinking about putting a cummins into a a 78-79 f-250. I will be contacting fordcummins.com, but was wondering if anyone knows of any other people/places where I could get some info. Thanks

WOW what extra parts?, Thats a loaded question.
It works real well and yes it was worth doing. I went from a Hopped up 460 getting 3 to 6 MPG to 15 to 21 MPG(Depending on Right foot pressure) The front handels it real well. Its only 250 pounds heavier then the 460. You will need alot of parts and you will have to fab a few parts. If you cheat and use the Dodge Tranny it will be cheeper. The Power is Unreal with the pump turned up. Alot more Power then the 460 had alot better Milage. Stock it was a pig but a few adjustments to the pump and WOW. I figure i'm at 250HP and around 600Flbs of torque. Im going to Dyno it next month and I will know for sure. I just put an address in my sig to pics of some of the conversion stuff.
Good Luck and have fun with the project.

where did you get the motor mounts, or did you make them? Did you use the conversion from fordcummins? Did you have to do anything to get it to fit with the air conditioning box and the turbo? I am collecting parts to do the same swap in a 78 f-250 supercab 4x4. Having trouble finding the dodge 5 speed, they are like hens teeth.

I built my mounts. I believe they are being sold now. You will have clearance problems with the turbo and stock A/C air box. Others have flipped the exhaust manifold and that supposedly gives you enough room. I am going to run a no factory A/C cab and use a Air-Tique king-cool. The engine is long and will need all of trhe room you have. Do a search on www.turbodieselregister.com for "Randy at Reliable Diesel" in AZ. He is supposed to have done a bunch of these.

BigBully, What intercooler are you running?

The motor mounts are the stock ones used on a 93 Cummins. The mount Towers had to be modified But it was real simple.
I used nothing from FordCummins.com . The Air Conditioning box Is another Story. Yes it has to be Highly Modified But I may have learned something new after I got it done. If you get a Low Mount Turbo Off a Factory Ford Truck Cummins 5.9 I think it will clear the A/C Box. The Front Crossmember has to be Modified Too, I had to cut 2 1/4 Inches out of it and box it back in. I had to fab a A/C Compressor Bracket and Weld a Pully onto the Cummins Fan Pully to run it, I also made a bracket for the Alternator and Used a Pully from the Dodge Alt. Radiator Hoses Now that was Fun.

Good luck Its alot of work, More then you realize. It took me 30 days @ 15 + - Hours per day to complete

Big bully,

Just interested, I have had a little bit to do wit cummins diesels fittes to heavy vechiles and they have been plagued with problems, the old 903's and similar ar chronic oil leakers, no matter how many times you fix them, several of the inline sixes spun main bearings and the new signature series are constantly comming back to the dearlership for warranty work. Does you cummins have oil leak problems or have I just been unlucky and got bad ones in the past?

When I first put it in I used Delvac oil and it started leaking so I changed to Valvoline and it has pretty much stopped but there is still a small leak. My friend has three 5.9s and as far as I know none of his leaks and the one has 336,000 miles on it. He is the one that told me to change from the Delvac Because he has always heard of it makeing them leak.

Never heard of Delvac making one leak. I have been running Delvac 1300 in my '93 Dodge since I bought it @69K miles. The truck leaks nothing and only uses a quart every 5K miles. Current mileage 186K.

Running synthetics will cause a small leak to turn into a large one and a large one turn into the Valdez.

bigbully, I looked threw your pics, nice job!! Did you have to cut your cross member down?

That is interesting about the Delvac. I usually use dino-oil, but I have thought about switching to Delvac though. Many of the truckers around here use it. ...then again maybe I won't!

what did you guys do about fuel tanks??
