Question front end growling on 2001 F-250

I have a 2001 F-250 V-10. It is 4wd and has 36,115 miles on it. At 36,020 it started making a wierd noise. I can be driving alond and hit a bump and this terrible noise from the left front starts. It sounds like the growl you get from aggresive tires. The wierd part is when you hit another bump it will go away. It cycles every time I hit a bump. If I slow down, speed up, shift, engage/disengage 4wd, it doesn't change. The only way to make it go away is to stop, or hit another bump in the road. Has anyone dealt with this oddity? I am kinda screwed since it started 20 miles out from under warrenty.

Thanks for any help

Welcome to FTE!

The first thing to chk is the front hubs ,crawl under the truck to make sure the hubs have released.
spin the axle shafts by hand .
They should turn with little drag if released.

Next I would raise the front of the truck and chk your wheel bearings.

Let us know

I should have mentioned what i done. I took off the wheel, checked the brakes, all seemed ok. I can spin the front driveshaft with little resistance with both tires on the ground when hubs are unlocked. I tried pulling/pushing the top of the wheel to check for loose bearings, no movement. It does it with the hubs locked or unlocked. I had a mechanic ride with me in it today, and he had no idea, but he wasn't a "Ford Mechanic"

GStanfield: If you bought the truck new, I would take it back to the dealer for check up. I wouldnt think a dealer would push you aside when the waranty is only over a few miles!! I just took my wifes car into dealer and they fixed it under warranty and it was 4000 miles over and 10 months over warranty! The garage main man told me they usually fix it if they believe it was the manufactures faulty part.

Worth a try,
Lenny

I did buy the truck new, but I have just moved to Wyonig from Georgia, and the dealer here was a jerk when I went to him today. He wouldn't even take the time to look for a service bulletin on it. He did say they would "inspect my brakes and suspension" for $50.00. I decided I would try to fix it myself.

I should have asked if any vibration is felt through the steering wheel or floor ?

Front axle u-joints
axle shaft bearings
Heat sheilds loose
Front shocks
When this happens is there any type of pulsation in your brake pedal?

This truck was not in a flooded area or had water up over the axles ?

also, there doesn't seem to be any pulse in the brakes, and braking doesn't change the noise

Did you chk under the hood to see if the fan or shroud is touching. something else loose !!

Can you make it happen at will?
If you can ,try on a back road ,get the noise to happen and put it in neutral ,see if noise continues at speed or under pwr.

From your description sound like something in drive train though

Yes I can make it happen just by hitting a bump in the road. It is totally predictable, and I haven't put it in neutral long, but i have shifted between gears several times and the noise didn't go away. I even tried downshifting to third and popping the clutch a little to try to "create my own bump" but this didn't work. The only way to get it to cycle on/off is to hit a bump in the road, or slow down below 10 mph and it will stop. The noise is loudest at 35-40, but continues up to 90 mph.

This truck is stock not lifted or oversize tires ,correct??????

Okay this is a 6speed .
Lets take another aproach to it .

Maybe this not really in the front but is resonating to the front .
Chk something when you get a chance
put your transfercase in neutral ,set your parking
start your engine ,and shift into all your gears slowly listening to rollover noise within the tranny
.
Chk your rear u-joints also ,I have seen things like people thinking the noise was in the front but its really in the rear.

Just thinking about this one again !
You mentioned that you turned the driveshaft (front) with both wheels on the ground .
did both front axle shafts also turn?????

Chk this !!!!!!

I still think you have a front hub/ axle problem
or maybe internal front spyder gear problem .

If you take a sharp turn while hiting a bump what happens??
