Spicer/Brownie

Hello

I am in the UK and have heard about Spicer/Brownie auxiliary gearboxes. Does anyone know about their three speed version,
underdrive/direct/overdrive. If so what are the chances of finding one and mating it to a gearbox it was never designed for.
Any ideas please.

Thanks

Smokeyone

Originally these were made by the Brownlipe transmission company which was later bought by Spicer. They are a close ratio transmission used to "split" the gears of the wide ratio main trans. The most common installations used a short driveline between the main trans. and the aux. trans. and another short driveline to the rear end.
They were available as a 3 or 4 speed version, under, direct and overdrive in the 3 speed. Low, under, direct and overdrive in the 4 speed (a choice of a progrissive or granny gear low, trust me that you don't want the granny low).
Most commonly they were a large trans. used in heavy diesel trucks. There were smaller versions made (not to common). I have seen custom instalations in a Ford 1 ton and a factory installation in an International Harvester Pickup.
Yes you could put it in almost anyting by doing the mid driveshaft type instalation. Hope this helps Dirk

Spicer

Thanks for the reply on the Spicer. Have you heard of them being installed attached to the main gearbox directly with the splined shafts to keep the overall extra length down.

Thanks again

Smokeyone

PS Pity there does'nt to appear to be a web site where someone has done this.......

There were "married" installations of a 4 speed main trans. and 4 speed aux. If I remember right this required different tranny cases designed for the installation. I have only seen this on heavy trucks.
There are a couple of companies that make 2 speed (you can buy either underdrive or overdrive) aux. units. I know US Gear is one of them that might be your best bet.
What are you trying to put this in anyway? Dirk
