Flicker'n headlights

My headlights and dash lights flicker ever so slightly (certainly enough to notice). What the heck could this be?

Flickering headlights

Try replacing the headlight switch box. It's located in the dash behind the **** that turns the lights off and on. My headlights were flickering and replacing the switchbox fixed it.

I've come to expect that if I own a vehicle, there will be issues with it and I will have to fix it. I have accepted the fact and trudge on dilligently...

When the lights were flickering in my '73, I found a rubbed spot in the taillight wiring going through the crossmember just infront of the rear bumper. It was grounding out the whole system. So I repaired the wire and covered it in a piece of rubber hose and haven't had problems since.

I agree with 73Custom, there is probably a wire rubbing on the frame somewhere causing this. I had this trouble with my 85 and it was the trailer wiring that was rubbing on the trailer hitch. A quick way to verify, is to unplug the whole tailight harness and see what happens. Do the lights go out or just flicker? If they go out and come back on a few seconds later, then new headlight switch is the answer.

flickering

also there might be a spare tire courtesy like just inside the bumper, had my 75 do the same thing when it rained or was a real heavy dewey morning. the courtesy light was missing the cover and was getting shorted by the rain

Do your lights go on and off or just a bright-dim flicker mainly at idle?

Is your alternator working right? Does everything dim, or just the headlights? I had a 79 which the alternator took about 6 monthes to go, in the mean time the lights would flicker just enough to notice, but would always work.

My '73 does the same thing. The headlights dim and heater fan slows at idle, when reved off idle it all picks up. It's been doing this for the entire 7years I've owned it, and I've since replaced the alt, regulator, battery and cables, just assume idle is too slow for the alt to keep up... I've learned not to notice it.
