XLT XL Package, explain?

I'm wondering what exactly consists of the following packages.

XL, XLT.

I thought that the XL was basically the standard pickup and it was a regular cab.

And I thought that XLT had the extended cab with a little room behind to the front seats to stow stuff.

But in the past couple days I have seen an XL with an extended cab and a XLT with a standard cab.

???

Thanks,
Justin

Are you talking about the '04 models? I think the 04 regular cabs now have a small access door to get to the back seat. As for the XL vs XLT, that's just a trim option. XL is your basic work truck: vinyl flooring, bench seat, ect. The XLT is an upgrade: carpeting, split bench w/ center arm rest, ect. As far as I know you can get an XL or XLT in regular cab, supercab, or supercrew.

XL, XLT, & Lariat are trim options. It has nothing to do with the size of the cab. XL is a base model and Lariat is the high end. Now there are other labels, like King Ranch and Harley Davidson, these are Lariats with even more luxury options (as well as power train options in some cases). Then you have stuff like FX4 which is basically a suspension upgrade. A few years ago "work" was actually the lowest optioned truck you could get. It was pretty much stripped.

I also believe that the XLT is the loaded truck? When I ordered mine, I wanted to go with the XL basic model, and add this and that and this and that, and by the time I was done, the dealer said "Why don't I just order you an XLT and add the carpet delete option?" It saved quite a bit of money. Though I could be wrong, but I thought the XLT was the trim package, as well as the loaded interior.

When I said trim, I meant interior and exterior options. Not just exterior, but the cloth seats, the cd player, the map lights, the cruise control, etc. The Lariat is the loaded option. It has the leather and some of the more high end options.

I also have an XLT with the carpet delete. With kids and mud, that should be standard.

Well, here are some numbers to help decide if buying the XLT package is a better buy, or purchasing the base XL with add-ons. These prices are straight off the window sticker of my '03 F150.

XL Convenience Group-spd control, tilt, tailgate lock, overhead console $350
Skid plates $160
Sliding rear window $125
AM?FM Stereo/clock/single CD $190
40/60 split bench cloth seats $400

Total cost for these was $1225. Mind you these are 'sticker' prices too.

And yes, I do regret not getting the power otpions and carpeting. I was trying to keep the price within a certain window. I also got stuck with the dinky low-rider 16 inch wheel/tire combo (P235/70R-16 OWL All Season) and those ugly styled steel wheels.

I LOVE my carpet delete. You don't have to worry about stains, and when it gets dirty, open the doors, and hose it out! I am sure that when they were putting it together in the factory they were thinking "Construction company truck" ... heheh.. but it's not.

The XLT will also have the power options, like power windows, steering, locks, that the XL does not feature. THe XL is more on the lines of a basic model not toom any options.

For the record you can't get an XL model in supercrew. And they are no longer considered trim options on the 04's, they are considered different modles of the same truck. For example, you could order a 03 back Lariat with the FX4 package, but the Fx4 is its own series or model now. Each truck line has distinctive features that make it different.

That’s just what Ford did starting with the 11th Gen body. They went from 5-lug axles to 6-lug.

I think GM did the same thing with their body style changeover in 1999 for the half-tons.
