psd on the beach in the sand

headed down to rocky point , mexico in a few weeks and was wondering if the 'girth' of my PSD will bury me in the sand. i usually lower the tire pressure in the tires on my jeep when im down there but the ford manual advises against it. ive got 35x12.50-17 inch BFG AT's on it?

The sand is fun with our trucks. I had to lower my tires down to 25 PSI on my last trip to the sand, but I have 16" wheels. The truck handled great and never got stuck. You can lower your pressure, but how far down I don't know. I did learn that with the larger wheels (16.5 and up) you have to be careful how far down you go (larger bead = more chance of losing it). I'd try them at 35 psi and see how they float. Other than that, I'd just be experimenting.

I once got stranded in soft sand, and had to lower my pressure to 10 psi to get it out.. no problem with coming off the rims, and I even got to pull the tow truck out when he got stuck trying to help me...

Fun place, Barstow river...

Don't tempt me...we are already having nights in the 20s up here in Wisconsin. Yup Big Icey F350 this a.m. Oooooooo I wish I was not so busy with work. I would cruise on down and help with those extra beers.

I haven't had any trouble at Rocky Point. I lower my air pressure to about 50 lbs or so, but I'm not sure I really need to. You didn't say if you had a 4x4. My brother has a 2wd truck and he gets stuck pretty often, I usually have to pull him out when it's time to leave.

Have a great trip! See you at JJ's!

ive got a 4x4---dont think id try the sand without it. how much pressure do you run in your tires if you 'air down' to 50 lbs?
we've rented a beachhouse out in playa dorada and just wanted to cruise down the beach and do a little fishing.

Hey I run mine in the sand all the time...Heck when I tow my 33 ft toy hauler to the dunes we air down and tow all the trailers out into the dunes...2nd gear low range works awsome..I run anywhere between 14-18 psi ...18 with the trailer..5th wheel....just dont do cookies with low psi....heck you wont even spin a tire with 15 psi in soft sand...im runnin BF-G all terrains 285-75-16...so have fun and experiment with different pressures....its easy for us we run onboard air compressors

Go for it, but bring a shovel just in case.

80 psi is what my tires normally have when I'm towing my 12,000 lb fifth wheel toy hauler. Last month was my first trip to Rocky Point. When I dragged the trailer down to the sand, I lowered my pressure to about 50 lbs just in case. I didn't get stuck, neither did my trailer. I do have onboard air, so I pumped everything up again when I got to harder ground. I was in low range the entire time on the sand.

Yeah, the toy hauler has one. Actually, it's just a portable air compressor that runs off AC power but the toy hauler has a generator and a fuel station. So, I can fill tires, run air tools and fill the quads with fuel when they run out. Kinda like my own little service station on wheels.

We all had a great weekend at Rocky Point....I can't wait to head back down there. This time I'll take a machine washer drum with me for camp fires. There were several people on the beach who took the spinning drum out of an old washing machine and burried it in the sand, then built their fire. They put a grill on it to cook with, could move it easily if the tide changed or wanted to move camp a little ways. Also, it put out quite a bit of heat through the perforated holes on the side of the drum. Now if I can just find an old appliance store around here somewhere......
