4.0 ranger and trailer brakes

I am sure that this has been asked a million times or more but I couldn't find the answer I needed searching.

I need to install an electric trailer brake controler in my 2000 ranger 4.0 4wd with a factory towing package. What controler is recommended and what needs to be done to wire it. The truck has a factory harness and 4-pin connector for the trailer lights.

I found a mysterious plug (not the OBD2) under the driver dash and had wondered of it was prewired like the big trucks are.

For your setup, get a Tekonsha Prodigy controller. I love mine. I don't know about the Rangers but all newer truck come with a prewired setup, and since you got a factory tow packge. you should be good to go. When you buy the controller, you should be able to buy the harness that will simply just plug into a connector by your pedals.

How much do you plan on towing?

Infrequently. If it gets to a point that I am towing often or far I am stepping up to a bigger truck. Never planned on doing any towing when I bought this truck. Taking the car to the shop, etc.
Got a prodigy and no problems wiring it now that I know that the truck is not prewired.
