Question Oil Draining out of breather

My buddy just got here and busted me on the board. He has a 88 ranger with a 4 holed motor. he says that oil is coming out of his "pcv" to the tune of a quart a day. I am not at all familliar with this motor. He says the there is a tube about mid block to the front , and the oil comes from here. anyone have a clue??? I'm scratching my head.TIA Mike and Jason

Oil Draining out of breather

I have a similar problem with my '88 2.0L

It does sound like a crank case ventilation problem, and the pvc on my 2.0 is under the alternator. the filler cap is meerly a vent.

the best way to change the PCV is to loosen the alternator and swing it out of the way. that will reveal the PCC. I only connect the lower fitting on the F-shaped valve. I stopped-up the upper fitting.

The fix aint perfect, but it does seem to reduce case pressure.

I also had the problem of the blown oil being shot all over my air filter, so I re-routed the hose to drain the oil on the ground.

I simply used some heater hose to vent the oil out of the filler
cap and down onto the ground. It still burns some oil, but at least it doesn't foul my aircleaner.

sounds like a broke piston or wore out piston rings, a quart aday thats alot for just a bad pcv valve, had 81 302 that did the same as you, tore motor done and found broke piston, the compression gets past the piston into the crank and pushes the oil any where it can go, it might be plugged oil drain back hole too, check drain back hole first then do a compression test

brokenrings id be willing to bet that the engine is possiably not
damaged as bad as you have read. The oil gallies have always on
2.3's been notorious for making oil backup & then do all sorts of wild things due to a restricted oil gallie drain. If the wrong pcv valve was also put in & is not heavy enough in weight for the oil to stay out well it will just suck it up. If it were my truck i would go & get a can of sea foam & have one of the vacuum lines suck up about 1/2 of the can then spray down the throttel bodie with
some deep creap [ another sea foam product ] use enough but not too much, then you let this mixture sit in the engine about 20
min [ put the truck back together so you can drive it ] & then drive
it for about 5 to 6 miles, now the other half of the can of sea foam
put it in the oil & drive truck for about 100 miles & then change the oil. This may help you out with this problem.
p.s. by the way do not worrie about the amount of smoke the engine will produce during this treatment, it will be extrem.
good luck turbo ted

The "F" shaped thing will pull off most PCV valves, and I think that is how the 2.3 likes it... Then you can put the PCV right in the line.. at least on most.
