drive shaft cv grease

Troubleshooting noise in cv joint at top of front drive shaft. When I removed the rubber boot and took apart the cv the grease was viscous like motor oil. Isn't cv grease supposed to be like gel? Could this be an indication that the grease had failed from overheating and resulted in the noise?
No damage to components, slight heat wear on surfaces.

Thanks for the help.
