Engine rebuild -- what to do, what to do

Hi. I haven't posted here for a while, but would like to get some pointers from those in the know.

I need to rebuild/replace my 351W engine in my 91 F-150 4X4. I thought about rebuilding it, and putting in a new cam, porting the heads, etc., but I am not sure I can do all that and still get it through emissions testing with the stock computer. Anyone have any experience with just what can and can't be done with these engines without changing computers?

If I want to change computers, who has the best one? Can I modify the engine for more power, get a new computer, and still pass emissions ( stroker? )?

If I can't do too much with the engine, I will try to find a good quality re-manufactured long block and drop it in.

Thanks for any help.

John.

i dont think you'll pass emmisions with a stroker ;-) . why swap the computers? i dont see any reason to swap computers unless yours is damaged or if youre converting to a mass air system. as far as getting more power and passing emmisions, edelbrock has a couple of engine parts (intake, heads, throttle bodies) that are emissions legal, so im guessing that means they will pass emmisions. shoot them an email and ask them, its worth a shot. good luck!

Wow,

They want a lot for their stuff. Putting together their recommended power kit would total up to a couple thousand, or more, buying stuff from Summit.

Engine rebuild -- what to do, what to do

LAST EDITED ON 22-Oct-01 AT 06:31 PM (EST)[p]here's what im getting from summit:

1. assembled edelbrock aluminum heads (complete with stainless steel intake and exhaust valves, springs, locks, seals, and reatiners) 1079.99
2. 5.0 truck intake manifold 519.95
3. twin 56mm throttel body 285.95
4. crane compucam 146.95

yes it is expensive, but since one of my really good friends is doing all the labor for me, then i can afford all the parts. so for around 2000 bucks, hopefully i'll have a nice engine with plenty of power. youre right, the parts are pretty expensive, but remember you dont really need to get everything. the most important part for your engine would probably be the cam and then just get a good valve job done on your heads and get them ported for some more power. as long as you dont go too wild on a cam, you should have no problem passing emissions testing. good luck!

Sounds good. I will be doing a bottom end to it also. I have some rod knock or someting, and low oil pressure at idle. So, I figure I will give it a complete overhaul, including balancing. I agree with putting in a mild cam, and perhaps the intake manifold. Then I should be able to port the heads, match them to the intake manifold, etc. Perhaps the throttle body would be a good investment too. Don't know how much of a difference it makes. I don't want to put on headers, they might get suspicious at the emissions test. I'll keep researching stuff, I want to start working on it when I get my vette out of the garage so I have room for the ford engine.

ive heard that the throttle body is only worth it if youre gonna be changing the stock heads. i think u should save the money from a new throttle body and maybe put it towards a cat back exhaust? just an idea.

Actually, I just put in a Gibson cat back exhaust system a few weeks ago because my old one was all rotted out and I didn't think the emissions people would let me even test it.

How about MAF conversion? Do you know anyone who has a kit that works with the 5.8L with the E4OD? The Ford one only works with the AOD or standard tranny.
