Threading shifter for aftermarket handle

I was wondering if anyone has threaded their shifter to be able to put a new handle on it, or if it is even possible. If you have, could you give me any pointers? Thanks a ton!!!

Scott

P.S. Or do the make some kind of adapter???

Are you talking automatic or manaul? If it;s a manual with the shifter on the floor, it's already threaded, and should be threaded to a standard size so that all shift ***** will work correctly.

I am sure that the shift **** is a press fit for both the trans and the transfer case. There are ***** out there that have a set screw instead of being threaded. You can remove the shift boot by removing the four screws in the trim ring and then remove the shifter lever from the shifter stub shaft. This is done by undoing the nut and putting it on the opposite side and tightening it back up to pull the tapered pin loose. You then undo the nut and pull the pin and then you can remove the shift lever to take it inside to a vise to hold it while threading it if required. I wonder if there are replacement shift levers available or trucks like there are for Mustangs which use the same trans. Would a mustang shifter work on a truck , probably too short though. I know there are some that have a better shift throw stop built into them as well to prevent the lever from traveling too far. Your local parts/sped shop should be able to help you on this .

Ha ha ha I just glued mine. The shifter that came with the truck didn't have threads so I just glued it, works like a charm......until you want to take it of ofcourse.....never thought of that. Oh well.

Fort Truck Manual shifter ***** are press fitted onto the stick.
I installed a Hammerhead Handle from B&M.
I had to grind down the splines and then cutt threads into it. Did work out fine and works well.

Or you can just get a Hurst Shifter....the shifters end is threaded so you can put all kinds of handles, so far I've had the Hurst T-Handle and love it.

Threading shifter for aftermarket handle

on my truck it was just vertical spline and the shift **** i bought was held on by allen key set screws so i just had to ream the inside of the shift **** out to fit it onto the shifter. It might be diff for auto shifters but if its for a stick id suggest buying a **** with set screws

i just glued mine in a old truck i had with j/b weld, in my 79 i pulled the plastic off the end and it glued on there too.
trying not to get too far off topic but a shifter isnt always a shifter, in my 79 i took one of those solid metal skull heads and tapped threads in it. put a large bolt in it and it made a one of a kind hood ornament the young punks can hang on and isnt going anywhere.

Hi,
On my 87 F-150 with a manual tranmission I had a tapered shaft, and the factory **** kept on falling off, making difficult at best to shift.
I since have installed a pool ball (#3) onto the shaft bb drilling the ball in increments until I believe was 9/16 at the base. I then used that epoxy putty inside the ball and smacked it on with a plastic hammer. Its been on for the past eleven years with no problems
