Can I get ODBII codes from the 2001 Ranger without a Scanner?

Can I get ODBII codes from the 2001 Ranger without a Scanner?
I have Autotap.. But my frigging Laptop is not charged...
My neighbor has a 2001 Ranger that is stubmbling and stalling that has a Check engine displayed.. I was wondering if there is antother way to retreive the codes???

Hi Chuckster, welcome to FTE!

The short answer is no...your friend's sytem is OBD-II/EEC-V which means he needs a code scanner to pull the codes.

just swing into the local autozone, checkers, pep boys, etc, most will pull the code for free.
