Just bought a 99 Ford Expo, but only got one key from the dealer. I know that the key has a computer chip in it, so is the Ford dealer the only place I can get an extra key? And about how much are they? Thanks!

 

I've seen them at key shops. From memory, they are around $30-$35 then you have to program it to your vehicle. You might find a better deal on Ebay.

 

But you need two already-programmed keys to program additional keys. Otherwise, a trip to the dealer is required.

 

Rather than buying 1 key, I highly suggest you buy 2 PATS keys off of ebay. You should be able to pick up 2 for $25 plus another $5-$7 for shipping. Then call around your local "Lock & Key" shops for best pricing to "Program". You should be able to find a shop to do it for $25 -$30 per key. IMPORTANT - ONLY HAVE 1 KEY PROGRAMMED. The double-cut for the keys should only cost a couple of bucks. You do need to take the Expy with you to the locksmith's and it'll take approximately 15 minutes for their computer to read the code from your vehicle. Then once you possess 2 programmed keys it's simple to program additional keys yourself in the vehicle. The cost to purchase the extra PATS key is very cheap insurance as you will always have at least 2 programmed keys if one is lost. Then you'll never have to pay a programming fee again for a replacement key. Programming instructions are available online, or I'll be happy to list a link for you if needed.

Second the ebay tip, bought two for $20 and the guy at the hardware store cut them for free. Two minutes to program and now I have backups. Another great tip from this forum!
