Different pads for each stage of wax with a buffer?
I use two different pads at least. One is a plastic backed terry pad for the wax and then I use as many plain terry pads to remove. Some people like lambs wool bonnets, I just use terry because that is what I have and what fits on my buffer.
With a buffer, you don't need much wax, and as you discovered, too much is just messy.
I have a cheapie buffer but it does pretty good on flat surfaces, but curved spots are tougher.
You have to be careful with a buffer not to stay in one place too long, especially corners, don't want to burn the paint off.
Good Luck,
