sqealing grease seals on a 96
Here is a thorn that my bronco stuck back in me again tonight. Its a 96 originaly w/auto hubs the factory grease seals are the two piece setup that consist of the metal seal in the hub and a rubber boot that rides against it on the spindle. I have replaced them 3 times in almost 3 years. Once when i replaced hubs and rotors and twice because after about 8 months of use because they start squealing. The last time I even put a small amount of grease between the two to avert this and apparently as of tonight when I started hearing it that didnt work. Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions. I think ford may have only used this seal on the 96 model or maybe just mine because the first time I replaced them all the chain parts stores and even ford dealer had the wrong seal which I found out after I had both the tore down with no second ride and the old seals were damaged from removal Had to go to napa to get the right seals and I have the part # if anyone would like it for future reference. Thanks

Mine does the same thing. When I did the front breaks and rotors I replaced the seals and it made a bad noise, had to rip it back apart and relace the seals on one side. It still gives off a slight noise but you have to have it on jack stands and roll the tire to hear it, if the trucks running you can't hear it. I hope I don't have to rip into the front end ever year to fix this. I thought about the grease fix but did not try it.

Seems like it only takes mine about 8 months to start sqealing after new seals are installed. I think what might be happening is the outer boot stops spinning with the inner seal. I thought maybe dirt and such from playing in the mud but I havent been out playin with her since I put the last set of seals on. So now Im not sure about that idea! And like yours bill mines seams to do it more on one side. (drivers) Are you sure yours doesnt do it on the road? I usualy cant hear mine just driving around untill it gets really bad, but if you aren't in the truck youll hear it. One quick way to check (this is how I usually find out) drive parrallel to a large metal or cinder block building where there isnt a lot of background noise (back of our super wm works good) with driver side closest to building and window down go about 5-10 mph. If its doing it you will hear the sound reflect off the building back to you. Not to scientific but it works .

My 96 does the same thing. I pulling off the hub and replaced the seals and about a month or two later same noise. I figured it out but jacking up the truck and spinning the wheel and listening. I could barely hear it when driving slow down the road with the windows open.
I sprayed some wd-40 down in there and it stopped for about a week maybe. I dont know of any real fix for it.
If someone comes up with something please post it. More annoying than anything else.
Take it easy.

I got to thinking bout this thing today and got to wondering bout that boot I think that its primarily there to help keep muck and water away from inner seal. As much as I hate silicone I hate to say this but do any of you think it would hurt to put a small amount of high temp silicone or some other adhesive between the two to bond them together. I cant see any pig problem with this other than if too much was applied.
