Saving Your Suspension When Hauling A Truck Camper

Don't let this happen to your suspension

For those of you who are veteran campers outfitting a truck for a camper or are truck camper newbies, we at Torklift International are here to help you, especially when it comes to understanding truck camper suspension and suspension upgrades. When it comes to towing and hauling with your truck camper, it’s best to make sure that you aren’t taxing your suspension or else you run the risk of not only lowering your ride quality and handling abilities but also ruining your entire truck itself including blowing out your tires and your engine.

Below are some great suspension modifications that you can do to your truck when you are outfitting a truck for a camper.

Four-Point Suspension

Suspension Modifications
There are plenty of suspension modifications out there that you can make to your truck. These suspension mods for towing come in many shapes and sizes including sway bars and airbags. While helpful, these mods tend to hurt more than help your truck suspension because they reduce your control points to only two rather than four. Two-point suspension provides only minimal control.

For example, airbags take all of the weight that you are applying and lift it above the leaf springs. While they may successfully level your ride they may unintentionally create issues with side-to-side sway and could potentially leak and eventually deflate leaving your truck suspension to handle the additional weight you are carrying. Sway bars compress the suspension on the outer parts of the truck and decompress it on the opposite side making it so force counters the weight transferred making for a flatter handling experience. They can lift your inner wheel as well as cause a ‘jacking’ effect where your suspension continually shortens due to the shocks not being able to properly react fast enough and can create an unsettling effect.

Alternative to Airbags and Sway Bars

Many don’t like the fact that you reduce your four-point suspension to two-point suspension with other suspension modifications. A great alternative to airbags and sway bars is the Torklift StableLoad suspension stabilizer. The StableLoads are the only suspension modifications that work with your factory suspension and use all four points of the suspension. The StableLoad suspension stabilizer pre-engages your factory installed overload leaf springs so your truck is prepared for the effects of a extra weight. With the StableLoads engaging the suspension sooner, you get a dramatically improved ride with reduced side-to-side way, porpoising and body roll. Another feature of the StableLoad is that when you do not have the truck camper loaded, you can still have that great factory ride because the StableLoads can be turned off when you're not towing or hauling.

So whether you are a truck camper newbie or a veteran truck camper, it’s always good to consider suspension modifications in order to save your truck and suspension grief down the road. The suspension for hauling a truck camper is much different than normal driving and should be taken into consideration before you might do major damage. Below are some other great advantages of Torklift StableLoads:
  • Dramatically improves safety, handling and reduces sway, body roll and porpoising
  • Ability to turn on and off in seconds (lower StableLoad application only)
  • Universal fit for all vehicles with factory installed upper or lower overloads
  • Quad contact design complements the vehicle manufacturer's four-point suspension as opposed to reducing it to two points of contact with all other rear suspension products
  • Quick no-drill installations
  • Enhances airbag performance by lowering airbag overload air pressure
  • Kit includes four StableLoads (outfits one complete vehicle)
  • Legendary Lifetime Warranty includes coverage for the vehicle factory leaf springs
  • Proudly made in the USA
