Insurance - F450 and bigger
Hello,
I'm in California and the only insurance policy I can get for my F450 is a commercial (business) policy. I bought this truck so I could tow my boat and my RV trailer, which is not a business venture. Has anyone been able to add a truck of this size to a personal insurance policy? If so, can you please share who the insurance company is.
Thanks!
Gordon

My uncle ran into the same problem when a bought a used Home Depot F-350 with a flatbed. When his insurance co. ran the VIN it came back as leaving Ford as a cab and chassis, thus making it a commercial truck in their eyes.
Luckily for him he owns enough property and claimed it as farm use and his carrier covered it.
We're in PA so there may be some loophole you can find.
Good luck.

AAA does actually offer insurance. I'm fairly sure they started working on their auto insurance in you neck of the words first. I'm over in NY and AAA has been in the auto insurance game for a few years this way.
PS i work for them but do roadside. I'm sure they gave us some sort of pamphlet about when they started the insurance stuff but I don't commit that stuff to memory. They tell us (roadside employees ) that their rates are competitive and such but I personally haven't gotten around to getting a quote yet.
Currently running an f250. I've considered jumping to the 450/550 chassis but in the middle of a home purchase so can't buy anything else new right now.

Find an agency that will write a policy with Allied Insurance. They have a "Medium Duty RV Policy" that allows them to write insurance on your F-450 IF you also insure your fifth wheel on the same policy.
Good Sam cancelled me after three years because they "made a mistake by insuring my F-450" after listing it as a "Semi".
When I found out about Allied, I actually saved about 25% over what I was paying Good Sam (National General, I think) by combining truck and trailer with them.
Rig in my Signature runs less than $2000 per year for full-timers coverage.

I have non commercial insurance on my f-450 dually.
do you have passenger plates on the truck.....if not...get that first..then get the insurance. most states have provisions for "modifications to registration class" and you may be able to fit into one of the rules. in NY, I can register an f-750 as a passenger vehicle if I put a pickup truck bed on it and put a camper top on the bed and "seat fittings" inside the bed, or "permently installed camping equipment".
