Help explain this receiver set up
So I have a 2016 Lariat 6.7 and this is my stock receiver. Never gave it much thought until I decided to get a new hitch. As you can see it has a sleeve to get it 2" shaft which is what I've always used. But can I remove the sleeve and use a 2.5"" shaft hitch?
What about that second piece that looks like another sleeve can it be removed to use a 3" shaft?? It doesn't appear to come out easily like the inner most one but why is it there if it can't be removed also to use 3"?
ultimately I'd like to to get rid of some of the slop the receiver causes.

You have two sleeves. Remove the inner and you get an opening for a 2.5 " shank. Remove the second and you get to a 3" shank.
My F-350 looks just like yours.
If you want to use the full potential of your receiver hitch, and reduce the noise of the sleeves, then check out this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...upon-here.html
I have a weigh-safe 3" shank ball mount. It's works pretty slick.
EDIT: Ignore most of this post as it is completely wrong. He has a 2.5" hitch, not a 3".

Umm, you've only got one sleeve. Of the three rings around that two inch hitch the inner most one is the 2.5 to 2.0 adapter, the outer most one should be welded on the back side, and the middle one is the 2.5 square tube receiver.
I think the purpose of that outer most ring is to help prevent the receiver tube from being bent out of shape.
To add on to what I've posted: From looking at the 2016 towing guide I think a 2.5" receiver was the largest available for 2016 model year trucks.
