oil in exhaust- 7.3

Hi,

New member and fairly new to diesels. I recently purchased an 83 F-250 3/4 XL . Looking under the hood, Its very clean. meaning no oil on top of the motor or anywear else until the transmission is looked at. The organization I purschased the vehical at is willing to give a small refund of purchase price for the transmission problem.. I went to drive this off the lot and turned right around and came back.

I'll do my best to get to the point. Hopefully I'll NOT make this long post.

The transmission wont shift out of first but it does have reverse.
it has a C6 in it at present. I looked around and found a rebuilt C6 to replace it.. Is There a fix for the present trans that I'm over looking? Then again, a rebuilt is obvious

Can a manual transmission, say a 5 speed be installed when its had an automatic and visa versa? Does the internal wear make a difference in tranny swaps?

When cleaning off the transmission, I noticed oil on the starter. Both manifolds leak where the pipes bolt to them.. Is this rings, vavles, both, something else or simply a common occurance with diesels?

Most diesels I have looked at do have oil around the manifolds but its mainly at the block. or so I've thought.

The truck appears to be a project that someone was working on at one time. It doesnt have an ac pump. Alot of the motor and cab appears as though someone had a fairly deep interest in it at one time.

It starts good, sounds good etc until I look at the back of the motor. I'm questioning how it sounds at the moment.. I hope my ear isnt off...

oil in exhaust- 7.3

You may go up and ask in the diesel forum. They know more than I do. About the shifting problem, my first thought would be a bad vacuum modulator on the tranny, or a crack in the vacuum line. But, yours is a diesel which has no vacuum. How do they make a c6 shift with no vacuum? Like I said, go up to the other forum, maybe they know.

Your diesel has a VRV vacuum regulator valve on the injection pump throttle shaft. One hose goes to the modulator and the other to the vacuum supply manifold. There is a vacuum pump on the lower passenger side of the engine and its driven off the alternator by a short belt. Make sure its connected and functioning. It also runs your brake booster unless is hydroboost, so you would have a hard brake pedal if its not working. I would put n E4OD in it if you can because it has overdrive, but you would have to have the electronics for that including a different valve on the IP throttle shaft. as for the oil all over the back of the engine, try replacing the valve cover gaskets or tightening the valve cover bolts a little. As for the way it sounds, dont really worry about that unless theres something obvious sounding. I usually judge one by how much the truck shakes. A good running 7.3 or 6.9 will not shake in drive. Look at the exhaust smoke too when you goose it it should let out a little black smoke and at startup and hard pulls, but not at idle so much. Good luck with it man.
