Front end grease fittings

1999 F150 4.2L 235,000 miles

I read in my Haynes manual that if your front end joints don't have grease fittings they have plugs instead and you can take the plugs out and replace them with grease fittings.

I took a look and saw some metal bumps on top of the joints but I don't see how you can get them out, if it's even possible. Anyone ever done this?

I would SWAG that with those miles, some front end components have been replaced so who knows what is in there. Don't believe everything you read in a Haynes manual.
