The VIN "L" engine in the 1999 Expy was a 5.4 SOHC 2-valve engine.
From what I understand the previous owner put another engine in it...

I suppose that would be the best way but I'm working out in the yard and have no Concrete or a way to lift it...
I'll have to borrow an A frame to at least pull the engine...
Before I get that far I will pull both heads and check the cylinder walls...
If none are hurt I'll pull the pan and replace that #3 piston with a new one...
It is the 5.4 DOHC evidently from a Navigator...
Original engine was pulled before I got it...
Been raining here for 2 weeks now...

Need the whole head casting number to learn anything from it. And the sticker on the valve cover is useless knowing the motor has been changed. That could be the valve cover off the original motor.

OK with a piece of scotch bright I cleaned up the head...
Casting # RF-XL3E-6090-C2OD PI
Picture of the front of the valve cover which is obviously a SOHC 2V head...
Don't know why I didn't notice that before...
The Expedition is really nice inside and out except for this engine and mice have chewed up the heat AC box and vacuum lines under the dash...
If I can get the engine sorted out I'll replace the HVAP box
Been there, done that before with the blend door on my last 2000 F-150...

Yep, that's a 2-valve head alright. Less power but only 1/2 the cost to do a valve job.

I noticed the difference in prices on ebay heads...Big difference...
I have it down to the heads, harmonic balancer, PS pump, and timing cover...
We had another down pour here so will be a few days before I can get under it without having to swim in
In the mean time I'll clean up the block...
When I pulled the intake there were several odd and end bolts laying under the plenum...Looks like a catch-all for clumsy hands...
Found a 99 F-150 on our local swap shop for 300 bucks engine locked up...
Going to go check it out Sat...

Well the truck was already sold...I got everything disassembled and wasn't as bad as I thought...No hole in the piston but beat above the top ring groove closing off the gap...Screeches when I turn it over says top ring is in distress...
Head wasn't hardly hurt. bolt was stuck under the intake valve and a few dimples on the flat surface of the combustion chamber...Valves are not leaking...Safe!
I ordered a ball hone and a used piston, rod and rings...I need to buy an individual rod bearing and rings to be safe...I wonder if you can buy a ring set for one piston? I know rod bearings used to be sold individually...Going to raise the truck on some ramps and get to the oil pan by dropping the cross member and the 3rd member down a few inches to clear the oil pan...
That's the plan...

Engine is running fine now but going to replace the timing chains and tensioners before I close up the timing cover....
Glad that's over with....
Now! On to the heater housing under the dash....
The mice have taken over the box and chewed up vacuum lines and foam...
Stinks bad too...
I would like to know if the housing from an 03 Expedition is the same as the 99 model???
I have access to a complete under dash heat/ AC box from an 03 Expedition for free if it will fit my 99...
Will these 2 interchange???
Thanks in advance, Steve

There is a canister in the rear left inside the frame next to where the tailpipe comes out...
Anyone know what that is?
Has a wiring harness coming out of the front of it...
I thought it might be an air pump but there are no air bags on it...

I think that is a gas vapor canister, I think the wires are for a purge valve. My 97 has that on the drivers side rear near the spare. I have had emission codes from it before that were fixed with a couple taps from a mallet.

Yes, That's what I found out...
I was trying to find out how to start a new thread and finally figured it out...
I did get a reply from it...
I was thinking it might be an air ride pump first but there were no bags under the Expy...
Thank you for replying...
