Distance to empty and what Is left in the tank

Hi, My results seem to be a lot different than many have posted here so thought I would pass along. I have a short bed SC diesel with the 29 gal tank. Picked it up beginning of the month. I just hit "0 miles" to empty. I timed it so that I was able to fill it up within a 1/2 mile of the computer telling me I am empty. I put 27.2 gal in. So with a 29 gal tank that is only 1.8 gal reserve and that would be draining it dry. That is only 25+/- miles reserve. To me that is pretty darn accurate considering a small reserve. I certainly do not see the 5+gal left in the tank others have talked about... your mileage may very...

That is how the 34 tank should be! Sounds like your reports are more in line with the 48 gallon trucks too. Thanks for the info.

I have the 34 gal tank. Went to 16 MTE and it took 27.5gal. Next time I ran it 24 miles past 0 MTE and it took 30.6 gal.

I'm not a ford engineer but I have built a couple fuel tanks in my time, and normally you don't have the float hit the bottom of the tank, 90% of the time you are about 1/2 to an inch from the bottom of the tank when the float is fully extended (down). Therefore, if you think about it, how will the truck know you have more fuel than the float at it's fullest extension, it cannot. And for my second point, take that say 1/2 inch deep of fuel and cover the bottom surface of the entire tank, the larger tanks will have a larger amount of fuel left in it after the sensor says it's empty, and why the guys with a 48 gal (larger) tank sees more left in the tank than guys with the smaller tank.

Also remember guys, just because there is a reserve (extra fuel in there, not truly a reserve), doesn't mean you will be able to use it all in all situations. Any hills that pulls the fuel out of the pickup pot can leave you stranded even if you were able to go XX miles past 0 DTE last time.

Funny this thread topic popped up again today, I just filled up 10mins ago. My 50 DTE warning popped up 1 mile from my local Chevron. I don't normally fill up this soon, but I did today because of this thread. 25.3 gallons! There's no excuse for this, Ford messed something up on the 34 gallon tank.

So in 2017 no one has figured out how to just make an area just bigger than the float and about an 1/2 inch deeper than the rest of the tank? This way the float would truly be at ZERO when it read ZERO. I'm not a rocket scientist but this seems a little too easy to remedy.

Couldn't you just hang the tank with a slight tilt to it so the float set at the lowest point? This way the fuel would only cover maybe 1/10th of the bottom surface.

I haven't tried this in my 2017, but when I had my 08 6.4, I could put in an additional 3-4 gallons after the pump initially stopped if I pumped the fuel very slow so that it wouldn't foam up to the nozzle.

Which way would you tilt it? would you run the risk of "HOPING" everyone will be heading either uphill or downhill when it goes to 0 DTE, or would you include a safety buffer?

Thanks for the update. Yes...it is strange that EVERYONE that has a 34 is reporting a 5 gallon reserve....so we know they are being build the same way. Not sure that way is the way we want it....LOL

With the 34gal tanks I would think a re-programming of the computer to calculate correctly would be in order. This way it would be a quick flash at your next service call.

This just in....down to 85 miles, filled my 34 gallon tank and it topped out at 23 gallons. Since I had reset my mileage button at the prior fill up it calculates out close to a 5 gallon reserve.

You tilt it slightly to the direction of the float. We are only talking enough to make the last little but that you were saying is across the bottom of the tank to move in the direction of the pickup/float. This would make the remainder left at ZERO to be much less.

Put a fuel pickup on each end of the tank. Problem solved.
