1948 f1 mysterious drain outlets

There should be a hole in the frame of the windshield to allow the water that tends to collect in the corner to drain out. I've seen them on one or two of the '48s I've had but it seems they stopped installing them in the later models. Most likely they cost more to put in and didn't help much anyways. They became clogged and didn't drain.

There was a thread about those a long time ago. I think it was finally determined that not all trucks got the drain holes. If my memory is right I think we were able to narrow it down to only a handful of the assembly lines were the ones that installed the drain tubes. I can't remember for sure, like I said, its been a long lone time.

My 49 didn't have them. I was the first person to do any work in that area and there is no indication that there was. I haven't seen that in other trucks up here either. Like Bobby says it's likely not all trucks got them. On a side note, those areas around the windshield bottom corners on my truck were in nearly pristine condition, no rust.

I guess that it depends upon how concerned you are about being totally original. That would be a good feature for judges to check on a car show like a Concours d'Elegance. For the rest of us I think that it is only a way to rust out the windshield frame which ironically those tubes were supposed to prevent.
