How much longer on these tires?

Hey guys,

How much longer do you think these will last? Trying to get an idea as new ones are not "in the budget" right now.

Looks the worst here.<br/>

Sidewall up near the top.

Plenty of chunky tread but what about rot?

Running 1/2 way across the continent for a Spring Break family vacation. That's making me think I should just do it, but don't want to bust out the wallet if I do not really have to.

Thank you for your advice.

I wouldn't drive any where on those tires, especially in a 8,000lb vehicle.

Your tires are the only thing that comes in contact with the ground. Watch a few videos on youtube about people that blow out a tire and roll a vehicle. I know I wouldn't risk my family to a set of bad tires. A proper set of tires that are inflated right will prevent many flats, wrecks, and issues. Change out ASAP is my personal opinion.

What is the date code on those old BFGs? They look ancient, and I too would replace if planning a drive farther than the corner convenience store.
I ungraded to my current 35"s when one of the 32"s that came with my 18" wheels started to look about 1/10 that bad.

Yeah I would not run those on a family vacation at all!!! Thats asking for a blow out, which could get ugly real quick at hwy speed.

I have bought used tires with great success of CL. Find someone who wanted to go to different wheels and/or tire size. You should be able to pick up a good set of tires for $400-600. Save some money and be much safer.

Also most tire places will do some sort of finance option. I would not normally recommend that. But if I had to choose between running bad tires on a big trip or making payments for the safety of my family I would do the payment option.

"Not in the budget"?
A wreck would certainly have a much bigger impact on your budget: medical bills, vehicle replacement, time loss from work.

Lastly, to be blunt:
If you die, I guess you won't need to worry, but having to live with killing someone, because you ignored the responses here....

I would not be putting my family on those tires unless the situation was dire.

Craigslist or check some of the tiny, local tire shops. You can get some fantastic deals if you really look for them.

Barter works well when the cash simply does not exist.

Roger that guys, looking up prices now. I did look at the date on the sidewalls and I think they were made in 2009 (0912 is the number)! If that's the case then let's just say they had a nice long and useful life.

Thanks for the advice.

It's not the miles, it's the years.

0912 is the ninth week of 2012. so that would make them first week of march 2012.

LOL it most certainly has! They really look bad now compared to the fall when I last had my face that close to them. Ol' man winter (salt too) having his way at my old shoes.

Talked to a mechanic at work today and he said "yeah, that one is gettin' bad." Those are the photos above of the worst tire.

What kinda disturbs me is I put those on in the August of 2012 (at least that is the date on the pride/vanity photo in my phone. If the date on them is 2009 that means wherever I bought them from gave me a set of three year old tires? Now I am thinking I need to go have look and see if I can find the papers from the install. Would that be a common thing in the industry? I wouldn't have thought to date check "new tires" from a store.

Maybe I am walking through life too naïve, then again 4.5 years and 45-50 thousand miles on them. They served well.

If you are not going through the tread but they are dry rotting then I recommend that your next set of shoes keep them soft with something like a tire shine. Helps protect the tires from the UV
