Unexpected trouble with steering gearbox

Hi guys,
I have a '52 F1 that when it arrived was stripped of many of its parts-including its steering. I bought a steering column off of eBay that was supposed to fit. After following a recent thread where a gentleman rebuilt his and posted great pictures. Everything in his pictures looked just like mine! I disassembled mine, ordered parts and waited patiently.
When the parts arrived, everything was much smaller than I took off of mine.
lower left is lower race I removed, next to it is the new one..right lower is upper race I removed and above it is the new one. You can see the two bearings are significantly different in size as well...

Is this from a big truck? If so, anyone have one I can use in my F1?
Thanks,
Doc

Here's what you should have, how do the new and old compare to these dimensions?

Great reference! Thank you!

Mine measure out to be the two between the ones you have highlighted. The upper is stamped 13C and is 1 15/16" and the lower is stamped 14C and is 2 1/4"

Does this mean it is out of a '53 or newer?

I learn so much here!

It could be a box from a 48-on big truck or parcel (like F-4 and larger), OR a 53-on F-350. That just means they all use the same bearing. 53-on steering columns are shorter than 48-52 if I remember correctly, so I'd guess it's the 48-52 big truck box. Need more info and possibly pics to really identify.

Look at the steering box casting. The '48-'52 box has the input shaft and worm gear entering the box UNDER the sector shaft on all standard cab models regardless of size. The '53-'56 gearbox has the input shaft and worm gear entering the box ABOVE the sector shaft. That should help you identify it at a glance.

BlueOvalRage, Thanks for that tip! The sector shaft is above the input shaft-so its a '48-'52?
Ross, here are the pictures/measurements you mentioned that may help... The column tube is 38 3/4" long and the worm gear shaft is 44 3/4" long.

That shaft length identifies it as an F-4/5/6 box. See if the worm has a number stamped on it to confirm. (edit -- I wonder where exactly they are measuring on the shaft? T/TH/TL = F-4/F-5/F-6, #36 stamped on worm)

I measured it from the very end of the worm gear.
It does have a 36 stamped on the worm gear.

Since I have it all apart, I would love to put the new bearings/races in it an find the gasket/shim kit to put it back together and/or get it into the hands of someone that could use it.

Could anyone use it?

Post the numbers stamped on the bearing and races.

Edit: #36 Steering Shaft & Worm from a 1948/52 F4 (TL); F5 (T); F6 (TH).

The races have 14-C and 13-C stamped on them, cannot find any numbers on the bearings themselves.

Thanks,

If you can't find the correct bearings for the box you have, I should be able to help you out with a F1 steering box. Depending where you are in Michigan, we wouldn't even have to ship it. You can PM me if you like.

Wow!

Bill,

You are the best! I wil be able to put it back together rebuilt and ready for someone that can use it someday! I just would feel awful not finishing it.

Once again, thank you!
