CJ-4 is still acceptable and what many people in this thread are searching for. The problem seems to be the CK-4 oil meeting Ford specs.

So ford accepts rotella t-6 if its says cj-4/sn in the api star donut on front of jug even if ck-4 is listed on the back?

No, they do not. If CK4 is on the back, they are going by the logic that it is backwards compatible and will meet CJ4 as well. Ford says this is not the case.

If Rotella T6 has CK-4 anywhere on the container, it is a CK-4 formulation and is not currently approved for use in your Ford diesel.

ok lets then ask the question... who runs T-6? who runs T-5? is there a difference in milage before oil change is needed? or oil analysis?
I only use mine as a DD, if it was used for Hot Shot or something else then the oil change intervial would be different.

BTW: I have used T-6 in all the diesels I have owned, from the green color motors, to red, to yeller, 6.4, 6.7

Correct me if I'm wrong here guys but from what I have read the CK-4 oil is not the same oil as the old CJ-4. From what I have read the EPA has forced oil companies to limit or eliminate zinc out of there blend, which was part of most oil brands additive package to help prevent wear. Since ford has not done enough testing to know how that reduction or elimination will affect there Diesel engines they have not approved most CK-4 oils. That is why this is such a mess and confusing as to what to use.

From my understanding you are half-correct. Ford has tested T-6, CK-4 and said it caused too much wear on the engine and that is why it isn't approved.

Different oil companies attain the CK-4 standard, differently.

yes, CJ-4 and CK-4 are not the same.

I ran FoMoCo 10w-30 and then switched to T6, CJ-4. Noticed no difference in mpg. My main use is DD with occasional hauling or pulling a relatively light trailer.

I am wondering if changing to T-5 would be about the next best thing and if so how many few miles would you get on an oil change??

Valvoline PBE for $18.99 at NAPA sure is a good deal right now. Cheaper than T6 usually is at Wally world. That's the route I'm going. Maybe buy enough for the year and be done with it. It won't be cheaper than that.

I know it isn't synthetic but, i just purchased Chevron Delo for $16.50 / gal to change the oil in my Dad's old tractor. That's all he would use in any of his equipment diesel or otherwise.

Yea, I just bought 10 gallons of Delo 400 5w40 full synthetic CJ-4 from Wally world....CJ-4. Thats why I started this thread. It's not even orderable online from Walmart anymore, had to go to a couple separate Walmarts in my area to scrounge up 10 gallons.

I used to run Delo 15w40 in my 2005 6.0, and was fine. I completely comfortable running the Delo syn in my 2016, at least for the next year. Hopefully this time next year, this is all sorted out. I'd also have no problem switching to the Valvoline either, its just harder to find around here.

According to the Chevron website, they stop with the CJ-4 next month.

If I understand the question, I doubt I would lose MPG by going to T-5. I really like a 5W oil over a 10W oil, especially in the winter here.

Need to make sure T-5 isn't Ck-4 as well though. I'm not a brand loyal person. I try to get what I think is the best bang for my buck and what I can easily find. If that means going back to FoMoCo or switching to Valvoline, Chevron, Amsoil, Schaefers, or something else so be it.

Last time I was getting ready to try valvoline, but I found Shell with a rebate and on sale... IIRC, it was $15 - $16 a gallon and I bought a bunch of it at that price.

One thing I do want is that Ford says the oil I use conforms to their spec.

I cleaned out my NAPA of PBE today. 7 gallons at 18.99. That should hold me over until this is sorted...
