COOLANT LEAK!!

`Hello All!

the other day when i stated my 97' I could hear a light "whining." Im assuming that was the pulley? When I took it out for lunch I noticed a significant coolant leak when I returned to my truck. I rushed back to work. I had a friend bring me a few gallons of coolant.

It started to leak again right under the fan after a couple gallons were put in. I was able to make it home with out overheating. The canister was half full by the time I made it home and a continuous leak continued to what I believe emptied the system. Any thoughts!!??? the water pump?

thanks!!

sounds like water pump to me but I would fill it back up with water and check to make sure before tearing it down

This may be a dumb question but by adding water and it leaking how will I tell if it is the water pump?

Look under the hood while the engine's running. Look for a leak right at the water pump (and elsewhere, of course). Quite likely you'll only see the leak while the engine's running.

Pay special attention to the little hole under the water pump shaft. It's a weep hole to let you know when the internal seal goes bad.

So put a garden hose in the reservoir and watch for where it's leaking. My father-in-law had a pump go bad that completely drained his system, but it was a little more catastrophic than you're describing. The pump housing completely broke sending the fan towards the radiator.
