Hard starting 6.2

So this has happened twice now. I go to start the truck and it cranks (uncontrollably) without firing. I have to turn the key back to "off" to stop the cranking. It did it twice and then on the third attempt it started, albeit, a little slowly. Funny thing is that this has happened two times and each time was after filling it up with gas still sitting at the island. 6.2 gas with 38k miles. I have not noticed any other issues and it has never done this other than those 2 times. Anyone have any ideas??

I am no expert, but the uncontrollable starting is normal.. I think Ford has designed the starter system to keep starting until it actually starts.. I noticed this after owning my 2015.. (you need only to click the starter with the key switch and let go and it will keep cranking until it starts).. This does not solve your problem, but I am sure someone will post a reason for not starting..

It sounds like your fuel pump. How many miles do you have on your truck? I was a fleet mechanic for 30yrs and have seen this many times. I think it's probably the temperature diffrence in the fuel after you fill up causing the worn fuel pump to temporarily lock up. You are probably going to need a fuel pump in the near future.

do you refill mostly below 1/4 tank.? or almost on "E"...?

the fuel is used to keep the pump cool... maybe on the way out.

Next time this happens.. Hold the key forward... if its like my truck. it will crank through the standard 3 second time, and if you continue to hold the key forward it will crank for about 1-2 more seconds and then fire up.. Mine will fire every time and will drives just fine after it fires.. I have yet to figure out what the reason is.. it started around 2k miles ago and I am on 48k now.

My Lincoln behaved exactly as you describe. Turned out the battery was dying. The computers that control the engines and transmissions on these vehicles are very sensitive to voltage levels. Stop by any auto parts joint and have your battery load tested. It's free.

I noticed that auto crank feature too one time I had barely turned the key to start when my hand slipped off....well it continued to crank and started.

I'd have it checked out. My 6.2 never cranked without firing right away, even on the coldest of days with or without being plugged in.

Not sure if it is related, but a 2015 Edge in the family that has the 3.5 V6 has an interesting issue. When the vehicle is plugged in during cold weather, the car will crank and crank and crank before starting. After it warms up, for the rest of the day it is fine. It doesn't have trouble starting, just cranks excessively. The issue only comes up when it has been plugged in.

Best of luck in determining what is going on and/or getting the issue resolved.

Mine did this when the fuel pump was going bad. It got to where it was doing it almost every start. Since replacing the fuel pump and control module a few thousand miles ago it hasn't done it at all.

I'm not saying you need to start throwing parts at it, but some diagnostic work is in order.

Thanks for all the replies. I regularly fill up on Fridays usually less than 10 gallon. Just rolled over 39k miles. If it is under half a tank, it fills fine. I only have trouble getting it to take gas if it is over 3/4 tank. I have a feeling the temps (ambient air) may have something to do with the truck not wanting gas. Still working on the starting issue. Today, it did start normally after putting in 4 gallon.

Harder Starting F150 6.2L

My 2013 F150 6.2 is taking longer and longer to start also. Normally it starts instantly but even this morning with 70 degree temps it took 3-4 seconds which is a long time compared to instantly. Truck has about 74,000 miles on it now.

Going to take a look at the fuse and relay and also just put in a new battery couple of months ago.

Thanks for your response too!

I had this same problem on my 2011 Mustang GT. First time around 1 yr and 7,000 miles... then it did it a few more times totally at random. Then it hasn't done it in over a year. I think it might be more with something I did with turning the key. The only way I could stop the constant starting was to turn it back off and try again. So strange.
