Bed wood

With the nice weather we have been having I was able to do some more work on my truck bed. Last fall I brought back from PA some rough sawn Hickory that was milled from a tree on our property. Before it got cold I was able to get it all cut and planed to size.

Yesterday I made all the rabbet cuts and got it all laid out in the with the strips partially installed.

I really like the look of the wood.

That looks good and as hard as hickory is it should take a beating for a long time. Progress is always good.

Hickory? You found a decent Hickory tree? Not really many of them around any more. Half a dozen different diseases have had their way with them, over the past 100 or so years. My neighbor had an old Hickory, in his yard, when I was young.
I think you have made fitting use of the trees wood.

Looks good!! I really like the color, it has a "used" look to it. Very nice.

Ooh nice hardwood, and the fact that it was from your property , and finished it yourself, really makes it special. Add the that the truck belonged to your Grandfather, wow that's one very special truck. I'm no expert on wood, but I bet with proper care it will probably outlast most of us. Nice job!

Nice indeed! That's a wood that I have yet to see used in a truck bed, well done.

Thanks everyone!.

I was going to use Black Locust...another hard wood, but when I found out my dad had this available, I couldn't resist.

Nice bed. Maybe you can help me remember the other use for hickory. I know ash was baseball bats but what was hickory. Was it banjo pots and ax handles?

That's Beautiful! Where do I put my order in? I need 9 footers for my Express bed. When I get to that point I hope to find locally milled lumber. We don't have Hickory......and yes we do have trees in Nebraska! LOL
