Question Largest tire on an old Ford 15 inch 5x5.5 steel wheel?

I was going to get some of the $100 used 37 x 16.5 Military tires that are sold locally by this guy 100Dollarman - Tires! but it would require me to get 16.5 inch wheels with the 5x5.5 lug pattern which I found on Summit Racing for about $75 a pop. Assuming I wanted to keep the stock steel wheels, how big of a tire could I run? I am assuming it would become more of an issue with width once you get up into the larger sizes. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You've got it. Width is the only issue.

Although, in extreme cases, too tall a tire on a "flimsy" wheel won't work out very well. The wheel will bend.

Very nice looking tire, but even that is $250 per. At that price it would be cheaper to buy the 16.5 inch wheels and get the $100 37 inch military tires. I saw some reviews saying the used military ones only last about 25,000 - 30,000 miles, but that sounds about rite for an aggressive non-highway tire.

I'm running 33x12.50 on 10" rims in the back with 31x10.50 on 10" rims in the front on **** truck. Mine are 30x9.50 on 8" rims front and 32x11.50 on 8" rims in the back.

5.5" Rim? I wouldn't go any wider than 6.5" wide on the tires. Any more than that and the tread will be pulled in a curved shape. So the center area of the tread will wear faster. Because the tire's contact patch is narrower.
