'64 F-100 Custom Cab - Long Bed - EDUCATE ME

Thinking about purchasing this truck. Would make a fun project for me and my two sons. Nothing fancy, no hot rod....just want a clean, mechanically sound truck for local home depot runs, tow my 17' alum to local lakes, and general cruising around town.

Details:

1964 F-100 Custom Cab, Long Bed, 292 V8, 3 on tree
Not running....last run one year ago
critters and dogs chewed through tail light wires, plug wires, and starter wire
No rust other than surface stuff
All trim in tact, including wheel beauty rigs
Missing hub caps
Missing rear bumper
Front hood bracket bent and g hood does not close properly
Body straight

Questions:

1. What is the good and bad with these solid axle models?

2. I noticed that I could barely fit in truck and steering wheel touched my beer belly. Didn't check to see if seat slide back anymore. Is this a common issue of steering wheel set back towards seat quite a bit?

3. Is this three on tree have an OD? (I once had a 1960 that had a OD...you would let off on accelerator and then accelerate and it would go into OD).

4. Are parts hard to find for this truck?
Ex. Bumper, hub caps, brake drums, front end parts, parts for this V8, trans parts, etc?

5. Are there online places for parts, manuals, etc?

What else can you share about this 1964 for my intended uses?

Thanks!

I think so if it is what you want. Big and tall fellas don't seem to have as pleasant of a time with these trucks. The cab was pretty small in these earlier years and the steering wheel/seat combo maybe not the most ergonomic. People who sit taller tend to have to duck down to see the traffic lights when at a stop and stuff like that. The seats don't adjust much and the seat back hits the back of the cab at the top edge so not much to do about that without changing things.

In 1966 the "Seat to Steering Wheel" clearance is listed as

5.21" (F-100, F-100 4x4, F-250)

6.67" (F-250 4x4, F-350)

"Effective head room" is listed as

40.9"

At 6-5, I never had this problem.

The seats don't adjust much and the seat back hits the back of the cab at the top edge so not much to do about that without changing things.
Change what things? Moving the in-cab tank to the rear doesn't give any extra legroom. As you said when all the way back, the backrest hits the back of the cab.

Some people install later steering wheels for more 'belly room,' but the horn is different as are the T/S switches and other fall-der-all.

This '64 looks pretty decent, though a PO cut (butchered) a hole in the dash for an aftermarket radio. While the steering wheel is the correct type, it's not the original. Would have been red originally.

It also doesn't fit correctly, but that's usually an EZ fix. The stainless steel 'bottlecap innie' hubcaps are reproduced.

If a person weighs enough then they tend to settle down in the seat a bit further. Can also depend on if the seat has the thicker foam in it or not, too, as a Custom Cab was equipped with like mine. And I suppose to some extent everyone is different.

I was mostly thinking different seats might help.

so....

wold the oem red steering wheel be a smaller diameter that what's in there? That would help with clearance. Again, I need to be sure seat was all the way back.

Where can an oem red steering wheel be sourced? used or are they made aftermarket?

What do factory hubcaps look like? can they sourced aftermarket or used oem only?

Also in need of oem air cleaner assembly. Where to source?

Thanks

Steering wheel is same diameter as what you have there.

Steering wheel is reproduced - but possibly only in black

They can be painted but if you want red through and through then original used would be a way.

Hubcaps

Oil bath air cleaner style is probably only available original used. Other members, eBay, craigslist as some ways. I find them on eBay by just searching on oil bath in Automotive sections and then looking at pictures. Some people don't know what they have or what it originally fit.
