Steering pump is toast, which one?

Ford reman or something else?

All the recent noise and vibration has finally surfaced in the pump. Thought it was either this or the turbo or worst case the trans. Turbo showed some radial wear and my hearing is bad, it got replaced.

Opinions on which one please?

Well if I can offer my opinion based on what I was told on here a year ago when I thought mine was going out which I still think it's headed that way is bite the bullet and go REDHEAD steering box all the way.

That's me offering my opinion but without digging into my previous threads about my related problems I couldn't really offer why it was said to go that route.

Something I'm still considering this year though because my steering is sloppy and while it was leaking which is why my alignment shop insisted that I replace it I decided to wait.

I just bought my LN alternator now so steering box will come next.

I went to Ford for the power steering pump and REDHEAD for steering gear box. Both worked out well and were very expensive. REDHEAD is just up the road, so I visited their shop, good people.

Have you tried some archoil in the fluid? Might buy you some time unless it's completely done for

Randy,

About 16 months ago I decided to replace my PS lines before my winter running of christmas trees as they had the typical northeast severe rust. I also figured I'd replace the PS pump since it's 200k under its belt and probably worn. Motorcraft from RockAuto was the source of the rebuilt pump and the Gates lines. Ford is real expensive on the lines so I went to Gates. Bought the puller / installer and replacement went fine. I'm glad I did the lines as they broke during the removal.

Full change out of fluid and cleaning of the reservoir. Damn thing had a slight hum. Wife doesn't hear it, I did. RockAuto sent out a replacement, no charge, no questions. Second one hums the same.

Now it might be the lines as they are a little different then stock. And I know Ford engineering would go through a redesign if they had a line harmonic. An engineer I worked with, and for a short time for, now works at Ford in NVH. There was another member here White Buffalo who needed a pump right after me, and I discussed my situation with him in posts. He also installed a Motorcraft (not sure about the lines) and had a hum.

It's not bad, but whomever is rebuilding these for Ford at least one year ago may be off on the process. It's not air as I pulled a vacuum on it during initial startup both times, and it has a year of driving and the hum is still there. Not what I care for, but maybe it's just a happy PS system.

I've also tried bracketing the lines if they were the harmonic to no avail.

Here's a brand new DNL
one. one.
Haven't found much info on the company but it's gotta be better than a humming ford reman. That sux you had to do it twice Jack! Doesn't look like a fun job at all.

Since I pulled my stator a long time ago it wasn't as bad as it could be. The second time I left the pressure hose on the pump and disconnected at the hydroboost. The hum is not real loud, just noticable when stopped.

Here's the thread.

The way to take the pump is disconnect at the hydro boost pressure connection and slide the pump out, use only three bolts.

Why did you pick DNJ?

Advance Auto with the discount code is $57 and that's lifetime warranty, pulley included.

Didn't come up with much as far as brand new pumps go. Only seen remans. Since Jack shared his experience with a oem reman that hums, figured new would be the better route.

How can a guy with the handle Bumblebee not want a humming power steering pump? Blows the mind.
