Where to go for service?

Going to borrow a relative's equipment trailer. It has been sitting a while and due to the weight of the load I want to tow, I want to have the trailer serviced prior to loading it. Have the brakes checked and possibly some new tires. It is worth it to me to refresh this trailer than to buy one that will sit on my property. Is this type of service any auto shop can/does do? Or are there specialty shops for trailers? -- noob

I would take it to an actual trailer service shop. The one I go to sells a lot of utility trailers not RV trailers.

Other possible options for shops are suspension and tractor repair (folks need to transport the tractor somehow and commonly with a trailer).

One thing to consider adding to service list is inspect and re-pack the bearings.

Yup, bearings, brakes, tires, and don't forget the breakaway battery (it's probably dead as a hammer). Also check all the lights and make sure the trailer's bed is sound and doesn't need any wood (?) planks replaced. Also check the loading ramps (if applicable). Make sure the trailer and the tires that were put on the trailer are rated for the weight you're going to load on the trailer. Also mind the tire's speed rating and resist the all to common desire to pull the trailer faster than the tires are rated for. Most trailer tires these days are "China Bomb" tires, and over speeding them kills them quite often. Carry at least one spare trailer tire if you're taking it out of town, and two would be better if you're going cross country.

I would only take my trailer to a "trailer shop" if I was having work done on it, (as opposed to just doing it myself).

My utility trailers (both enclosed and flat bed) sit most of the time, but they're paid for, and every once in a while I need one, so to me it's worth it to keep them around. It's up to you if it's "worth it" or not to buy your own. If this is a one time shot, then probably not. But if you're going to need one regularly, it may be better to just buy your own.

Trailer service shop.

Things to look at: tires and wheels, brakes, wiring and lights. Bake sure the breakaway works and make sure the lanyard is attached when towing.
