The 2.3L in my 92 Ranger died. Does anyone know if the 3.0L from a 90s Taurus or Sable will swap in there? The Ranger has the manual transmission with code M

The front face of the transmission will only bolt up another 2.3L/2.5L Lima engine.

Unhappy 92 engine options

It sounds like most engine swaps would also include a transmission swap, unless I could find a 4.0L

I would actually rather drive a 1984 Ranger 4x4 that I have, but the 2.8L in it died as well, and I can't find info on any engine swap for it

Your best bet for the '84 would be a 3.0 but it would be a total powertrain swap since none of the later motors will bolt to the trans in there now, maybe look at it from a different angle.. buy a later 4x4 with a shot body and swap your '94 sheet metal on to it.

I know the 2.5L from a late 90s Ranger will match up with the current transmission in the 1992, but would there be any problems with the ECU? I read that the 2.5L has a crank position sensor.

I was also wondering if it would be possible to swap in the whole drive train from a wrecked 1999 or 2000 into the 1984 I have. I know I would also have to include the fuel tank and lines, but would the electrical be too much of a challenge?
