While Greasing My Front Hubs I Found This
I greased my front hubs this weekend (didn't get into the needle bearings just yet) and I took everything apart. I can tell you that there is no need to disassemble the **** itself, there is nothing there, no gasket, no O ring, nothing that needs maintenance. I believe that these are Warn hubs but I am not sure because the stickers that used to bear their name are no longer there.
Here is what the **** looks like.
I pulled this center contraption out and took it apart, cleaned and lubed it too. It's held into the large aluminum outer piece with a spring like the one that holds that large piece into the hub. It's also held together that same way, I know, no pics of that part . There's a spring and two shims there that let the gear spin inside of that copper/brass washer.
Now, look at what the other notches look like. There are six of these notches all told in the piece but only three in the aluminum housing so only three get used. I neglected to get pics of the aluminum housing too.
The aluminum housing was worn a little but not as bad as this copper/brass piece. I reassembled it utilizing the three good notches.
This was on the second hub, I did not notice it on the first hub but that does not mean that it is not worn also, it just means that I need to take it apart again and check it.
So...is this an indication that a failure is imminent and that I should rebuild with some new parts, or should I just keep on going as I have been. I have had no symptoms with my 4WD.
Thanks for looking.
