Front brake job just completed: 2013 FX4

Just finished replacing pads and rotors on '13 FX4 w/ 31k miles.
The usual: warped, pulsating rotors.

There are many options re: pads and rotors, I wanted to keep it all Ford. Based on my experience with past F150's, I knew Ford had upgraded parts available.

I used the following:
Rotors: p/n BRR-227 Motorcraft
Pads: p/n BRSD-1414 Motorcraft

The rotors are improved in 2 key areas: there are more cooling vanes, and there is more material at the mounting flange and where the flange meets the braking surfaces. It's this weaker area on the OEM rotors that causes the rotors to have runout, resulting in chatter. That's why 'turning' the rotors is a stop-gap.
These improved rotors have shown well over 70k of service for me before.

As the part number suggests, the pads are "Super Duty" (not to be confused with the Super Duty truck line). The pads have a better compound than the OEM pads, are quiet, and have better grip. They also produce much less brake dust. The pads also come with new "slippers", the part that the ends of the pads ride on. These can get worn, causing the pads to bind slightly.

Rotors: $70 ea. from Amazon
Pads: $60 from Amazon

Hope this helps.

So if one was to take their F150 to the dealer and ask them to replace the brakes, what are the chances they will install the new/improved parts? (Or will the revised rotors already be on the shelf, but the pads maybe special order only if the customer requests them?)

You can ask for the severe duty pads. I try to make sure the customer is aware of the severe duty option on F250/350's since we see some come in with the brakes wore out in 30-40k miles due to towing.

Just walking in asking for a brake service on an F150, I'd say you'd get the standard Motorcraft replacement pads just about every time.

The Motorcraft pads/rotors will most likely be different than the OEM installed parts anyway. I know they were in the past and the factory oil filter and the Motorcraft oil filter still have different manufacturers.

Thank you very much. So there is normally not a severe duty option for F150's? (I'd basically be asking them to use F250 pads on my F150?)

There is a severe duty option for F150's. The F250/350 pads would not fit. You'll just have to specifically ask for the severe duty.

Not to confuse any confusion, but when the op said "SuperDuty", he meant "SuperDuty"...

Ford's description, not mine.

The FoMoCo p/n is: 8L3Z-2V001-B.

Our parts catalog at the dealership shows them as severe duty. There were also severe duty pads available for Crown Vic's that we put on police package cars.

I'm not familiar with what Motorcraft or their distributors call them but if you walk into a dealership and ask for Superduty pads they're probably going ask you if you drive an F250 or F350.

,,,which is precisely why I added the Motorcraft part number and description.

Tried to make this easy.....guess I failed.

I talked to my dealers parts department yesterday. The guy said that they use a lot of the "Super Duty" pads on the Superduty trucks. They don't stock the Super Duty pads for the F150 but can get them in a few hours. He asked me to call the day before I bring the truck in if I want the SD break pads. That's what I plan to do. Thanks for all the information that has been shared here.
