Water pump removal as a unit

Sorry I don't have time to search 90K threads for an answer.
I have a 99 SD 7.3 with 210K miles.
It has the OE water pump, clutch and fan. I am replacing every thing from pump to fan including pulley, thermostat and sensor.
The question is can every thing be removed as a unit? I don't see why not but never did one that way.

Thanks
Rod

If you are replacing everything, and the fan being in the way doesn't hinder your efforts, I don't see why it couldn't be pulled all together. Would just have to take the top screws off the fan shroud so it comes out with the fan. I cannot see one person pulling this off. Way too unbalanced. You will be at serious risk of knocking a hole in your radiator.

I know it will be a 4 handed job. I have replaced many in vans and they have to come out in pieces. I did one truck pump and never took the clutch and fan out. But I figure 210K, all new and no worries.
Thanks for the reply.

The fan is easy to remove and it gets it out of the way while removing the water pump. I think it would be easier than trying to remove it as one unit. If you decide to do it that way just be careful of the radiator.

I use an air chisel to remove the fan...works well if you have a steady hand.

Broke a 20" Snapon Breaker bar trying to get the clutch nut to move!

Yes, you can pull the shroud with the fan/clutch/pulley/water pump ASSEMBLY. I have done this 4 times on the fleet trucks and it isn't hard at all and very quick. Leave in one of the upper bolts on the pump (usually I leave one of the long upper right ones), then with cardboard protecting radiator, drop fan assembly into bottom of shroud and pull the shroud with left hand and fan/pump with right hand. You may have to clock the pump to get it to slide out! It is fun

I had recently replaced my water pump and found removing the fan was pretty simple. Just a little more difficult than removing your belt. That easy.

that's no fun. You may end up removing it as a unit just out of necessity.

When I did mine I felt like I was going to break the wrench too. Then I realised I was turning the wrong way. Can't remember if it's left hand threads or I was just being really dumb. But I'd like to think it's left handed. But as was said earlier wrap your radiator wether you take it out as one or in pieces. I grazed mine with the wrench and it left me with a leak that didn't show up in the 10 mile test drive but left a truck sized puddle on the floor of my garage two days later. If you do need a new radiator Towsley Ford in white bear lake is probably the cheapest one you'll find. But I also don't know what they charge for shipping, I live 30 miles from there and picked it up.

That's crazy.

I did the water pump on mine in 2014 and I was not looking forward to breaking that nut loose due to past experience. I rented the fan clutch removal tool from the parts store, got ready to heave on it with all my strength, and it popped loose with a minimum amount of effort. Easiest fan clutch removal ever.

The past experience was on my old F-150 with a 300. I had to hook an engine hoist up to the fan clutch tool. It raised the front of the truck up about two inches before it broke loose. There was no getting that one off by hand.

When Ichanged the factory water pump on mine at 220K ish I had to cut the original fan clutch off with a die grinder. Heat, bench vise, air chisel, giant F wrench, sledge all failed. I couldn't find a replacement pulley and needed it back that day so some careful surgery with a die grinder and I split the fan clutch nut in half and saved the pulley. I have done dozens since then and never encountered one as difficult as the factory pump.

And yes it will all come out as a unit, you already have the radiator drained so in my opinion just pull it out and give the fins a good cleaning while its accessible. It will take maybe another 10 minutes to remove the radiator if your really slow.

Thanks everyone for the input. Clem1226 I pulled the radiator and as you said it only took about 5 minutes to pull. That gave me plenty room to work. Then everything came out in one piece. Everything then went back together easy because I was replacing the pump, clutch, pulley, thermostat and housing and fan new. Just taking my time only too a couple hours.
