Looking at buying a used truck cap: fiberglass or aluminum?
Hi everyone I'm starting to think about going camping this summer, and essentially living out of my truck for at least a week. So that means most likely a truck cap or camper shell. I use both terms interchangeably. I know there are tents available to set up in the bed of a truck, but for my purposes I'm thinking a cap would best meet my needs. Due to budgetary constraints it must be used as I have set a budget of about $200-300 to buy the cap. I've had an aluminum cap before on my previous Rangers, but I have no personal experience with a fiberglass cap. What do you all recommend? There are pros and cons to both from what I can see. Aluminum is lighter, cheaper, and perhaps more versatile. Fiberglass is better insulated and might fit the lines of my truck better. However it's also heavier and more expensive. Aluminum usually comes with the ladder rack, where that would have to be added to fiberglass. The ladder rack allows for more storage up top.
For reference, this is being installed on a 2012 F-150 RC/LB. From what I've seen on Craigslist so far, the selection can be slim for an 8' bed. But there are a few in my price range. Does anyone know where I can look? If anyone has one for sale for this truck and you're anywhere near Pittsburgh, PA let me know. Thanks guys!
