Hey GB, the chain drive is back

GB
The truck with the chain drive is back on the seattle craigslist. It really looks like it belongs in your collection

If I had a bigger trailer and I lived on the mainland, I just might have gone for it. But getting that on a trailer with a truck towing it might be almost 250.00 for the ticket, plus the time off, plus what would I do with it? I'm not sure if I could get it turned around on my partially cleared and very hilly 10 acres. I'm not saying it isn't a really cool and unusual jailbar truck, but at some point I'd like to stay married and I'd like to have a few bucks left over for some semblence of 'retirement'. It looks to be really straight and quite rust-free considering it's pedigree, which I imagine is logging in the pacific NW. I'm not saying I won't buy it at some point..... "delivery available" ? Hmmmmmm

Thanks Mike! I got a Wednesday morning boost hearing that old song again. That old chain drive straight logger sure looks good with those big donuts filling up the wheel wells. I bet they're 900 x 20s anyhow.

I know that the subject of this truck has been hashed over here before but I am thinking that possibly this is a Sterling truck chassis with a Ford body on it.

Same ten lug front wheels. You open up an interesting can of worms here. Maybe tomorrow I call the guy... I thought the old add mentioned or showed a ford V8.

The 10 lug x 11.25" pattern was pretty common on the really big Dodge, GMC, and IHC trucks of the era. I don't find a listing for Sterling but would guess they sourced chassis components used by others across the industry. I have no record of Ford ever using that pattern. So knowing more about the engine, rest of the drive train, and chassis would help to know just how the truck came to be.

Additional thoughts. The pictured Sterling wears Motor Wheel Spoksteel wheels that are most likely hub piloted as used by GMC and REO. The Ford has Budds as would have been used by Dodge and IHC. Also, I'm ruling out the possibility that the wheels are 10 lug x 13 3/16" bolt pattern. Budd made them but Motor Wheel did not. Stu
