Thanks Dcavan001 for the info.... Are the '49 F1 or f47 (Canadian) common or rare? There seems to be a lot of them on the internet.

Question

My plan with the truck is to drop all the fluids out of everything and get it running to make sure everything works. Once that is done where would a guy begin for restoring it. I was thinking of just restoring it factory as its the original motor, tranny, rear end and it all worked last it was driven 12 years ago. I was thinking of taking the body off the frame getting it all sandblasted and painted and metal fixed where need be. Wheres a guy begin with that as this will be the first truck I've ever fixed up. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just trying to make a game plan for once I begin working on it this spring.

Not really that rare at all, in fact they are quite common. After ww2 Ford went full tilt manufacturing these trucks.

That is quite true - there would have been thousands made in the Canadian factories over the years. Some more information here

I will be happy to help, I've been reassembling junk for a long time and I'm still learning too.

My truck is in my man cave. It is pretty much seems like a model that I'm building, but at 1:1 scale. I have 10 years into it so far. I sit and stare at it and get all kinds of different ideas. I suppose if I would have made it a goal to get it up and running it would have turned out quite different.

Canadian built F-47 trucks are not rare in Canada as there were several thousand built between 1948 and 1950. About 30 to 40 percent were Mercury trucks or M-47's. Trucks in nice unrestored condition are hard to find. I believe the reason Canada only put the flathead V8 in the trucks was due to wartime production of Canadian Military trucks during WW2 by Ford. The CMP trucks were fitted with earlier versions of the V8. The tailgates are different on Canadian trucks. The US trucks have the FORD script, where as the Canadian trucks have a wider center raise embossment for FORD or MERCURY in block letters.

I hadn't thought about that. Was just looking at a mint condition F-47 this morning on Bonham's that apparently sold for an astounding $40K. It has the American style Ford script style tailgate.

It's great to see these trucks increasing in value. As you can see, my 1951 truck has the correct tailgate with the wider center embosment and FORD in block letters.

Tienmac,

That's the first that I have heard about the difference in tail gates for Canada.
My 1950 truck also came with the FORD block letter tailgate, but I assumed someone had changed it out for a later one at some point in the trucks life.

I also notice that other parts of my box appear different than what I see in parts catalogs.

When ordering parts do you know what year box parts best match up with the Canadian trucks?

Also, I would love to see a pile more pics of your truck, including the interior and motor.
