Not assuming anything ... just going off of your experience that it wandered all over the road. We all know that's not how these vehicles are supposed to drive so a logical conclusion is that something was not right.
Can we assume by your answer that you never did have the truck properly diagnosed by a knowledgeable professional?

JSCHRA,The entire front suspension on '05's and newer was totally redesigned. Pre '05 had leaf springs, post had coils and radius arms totally different set up, both drive well with the '05's and up riding a little better and turning a little tighter. Both drive well if everything is tight and adjusted properly.

OP,
I can only speak for my own truck, but if your only concern on getting a 4x4 is will it track straight...
My truck tracks straight going down the highway at normal speeds whether I have 4wd engaged or not. I wouldn't worry about it, just get the truck you want.

Why the surprise? This will be my 6th or 7th diesel.
I go with the deal. The diesel is the best deal. I think. You never know until you get to the dealer. $200 for nitrogen filled tires. $300 for the snipe hunting license, etc.
But, if this dealer is honest, $56k MSRP for under $40k. Dealers are asking more than that for used units.
