5.4L spark plug popped out ( Needs New Head Now )
Apparently, these 5.4L have the same spark plug pop on some of these motors. Well, it happened to me and needs a new head now. Problem is, I dont have 2300 bucks to have the dealer fix i , not to mention my warranty from another company doesnt cover it. If this is happening to these motors, why isnt ford adding this to the recall list?
anyone have any ideas? I called Ford directly and made a stink. I dont know where it will get me but it was worth a try.
any suggestions on how to get this repaired by ford/?
Thanks.

Why won't your warranty cover it? What warranty company do you have it through? That sounds odd. My Ext. Warranty picked up the tabe when mine blew out. They didnt pay for the coil, plug, or new bolts, But picked up all else. It was Guardian Warranty.

Helicoils are not recommended repair for this issue. There are steel inserts that work well.
You likely will not get much help from Ford since you bought it from a used car dealer. But it never hurts to ask for assistance. They tend to help thier loyal customers when well out of warranty.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to goto Ford and get them to replace the plugs, as a maintenance thing before there is a popped plug. Then if it did happen, you could go back after the dealer to come good for it. Say they screwed something up. Hell, I would do this every 50K, the $200 for a plug change is better than the $????K for a new head. I don't own a Ford yet, I have in the past. I am an import only guy now, but I am currently looking into a full size pickup. Was leaning toward a F-150, but now I am not sure.

I have had a heli coil replaced in a '99 f150 5.4L, and it worked out fine so far. It was in a work truck, and has about another 10-15K miles since and is still ok. Just keep an ear out for the standard "exhaust" leak sound and have it checked if it comes back.

Steve, did you remove head to put in heli coil? Local shop says this is 16 hours labor plus parts. Ford dealer wants $3802 for new head replacement. New engine is not much more. My truck is a 1999 F150 with 5.4L and 123,000 miles. Any insight appreciated. cep2

This might be a help to some of you looking for a new engine, head, or any other parts. I did a quick search on this site and there is atleast 150-200 5.4L engines for sale all around the country. Priced from $675 to over $3000. You should give it a try if you are looking for anything, I have found it very usefull. There is over 61 Million used car parts listed on there.

I find it kinda hard to believe that someone put a heil coil in a mod motor head. Unless you took the head off. cause that spark plug hole in like 2-3 inches deep. Most spark plug repair kits come with a big tool to re-do the threads.
16 hours? You're gettin raped!!!! I work at ford and I do lots of Cylinder heads on mod motors and i don't get anywhere near 16 hours to put a head on. I need to go work at the dealership so i can make some good money!
