Yes and here you can see how the repair is done!

If your plugs look like this:

use this kit 5141 with 51459 insert.

Here is the repair

Wink 5.4 spark plug popped out

Since there seems to be more than one instance of people posting on the internet the problem with the 5.4 spark plug "popping out" I would like to know if Ford "corrected" the "problem" to permit a plug with more threads to be used. If so what year did they correct this problem for the 5.4 engines?
Did this problem also occur with the 4.6 models as well? I am a layman and would like to buy a late model Expedition without the "short" threads. I am going to assume that Ford corrected this "problem."
Looking at the 1997 to 2000 Expeditions, which year was this problem addressed and corrected?

P.S. This board and its topics are an invaluable asset to someone like myself who likes to read-up on what is under the hood but does not do the work themselves. So permit me to thank you for sharing your knowledge base.
I own two Explorers as a result of my readings here.

I'm sorry for asking a lazy question, but is this only a problem with the older Triton engines (I'm only seeing it with pre-2000 tucks)? I have an '01 F-250SD with the 5.4 and with my luck if it can happen it will happen to me. Also my dad's '97 F-150 spit a plug last week and his is a 4.6L. By the way, didn't Ford re-design the heads when they upped the hp on the 5.4? Just an afterthought.

From what I understand..... (which isn't that much!!)

This doesn't usually happen from the factory, but DOES happen a LOT after a tune up (spark plug change)

Ford wont cover it because it says to re-torque the spark plugs every 3000 miles. If you do this it wont happen. The problem is it takes forever to re-torque your spark plugs.

wow, if I owned a modular V8, Ford Sparkplug's kit would be the way to go!

is there any real rational reason that Ford did not design these sparkplugs with the additional threads????!!?????!!!????

The only rational reason I can come up with is pure, unadulterated stupidity. Another black mark easily avoided.

Wink

As a update to the mystery of short plugs vs. long plugs:

I now know more about plugs than I ever wanted to know. I simply entered the automotive parts store and asked the guy behind the counter to bring me a single plug for 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 Expedition 4.6 and 5.4 engines.

"You want one plug for each year?" he asked. "Right?"

Hesitatingly, I answered: "That's right."

Silence overtook the length of the counter. Five men starred at me in a mixture of disbelief and terror. The only thing missing was a spotlight, an orchestra and popcorn.

Someone on the end said: "Get 'em the plugs."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the time it took to get them out of their boxes a small crowd had gathered on each side of the counter.

What seemed like a whole minute of silence past.
The seasons changed.
The tides receeded.
The sun set in the West.

Finally a voice asked: "Why are those shorter?"

Why indeed?

I have a 1999 f-150 5.4L and have the sound of the "standard exhaust leak" as described above. Could this be a popped plug?, what are other symtoms of this ?And if repairing, wont metal shavings be dropping into the cylander chamber. I have all service records done by ford just about every 3,000 miles, does that qualify me for any coverage? Thanks in advance.

Jason,
If it was a popped plug you would know it. Your truck would be vibrating, shuddering BADLY and making a VERY LOUD popping noise.....If you just have a slight popping noise I would think its the exhaust.
