Measurements: Excursion vs. Expedition EL

As promised previously , I am creating this post to compare measurements of an Excursion vs. Expedition EL. I found in other posts where they compared them that it wasn't a fair match up because they used the older Expeditions or non- EL. I have now had both and took some general measurements to provide to you all in the event you are deciding to make the switch from one to another. I am not biased on either and think they are both great SUV's but definitely will agree that each has their own purpose. Here are the measurements i took:

Excursion measurements:

Length-220"
Width-72"
Height-78 1/2"
Front seat to firewall 30"- with seat all the way back
Seat width 21"
Seat depth 21 1/2"
Top of driver's to headliner 37
2nd row seat front to back of driver's 15"
2nd row width -21
2nd row depth -18 1/2
2nd row to headliner-38
3rd row front to back of 2nd -13
3rd row width 46
Depth 18 1/2
3rd row to headliner 36
Cargo depth 39 1/2
Cargo width 53
Cargo height 41

Expedition EL:

Length-207"
Width-71"
Height-80"
Front seat to firewall-28"-with seat all the way back
Seat width 20"
Seat depth 20"
Top of driver's to headliner 37"
2nd row seat front to back of driver's -8"
2nd row width -19 1/2"
2nd row depth -18 1/2"
2nd row to headliner-36 1/2"
3rd row front to back of 2nd -11 1/2"
3rd row width -46"
Depth -15 1/2"
3rd row to headliner -35 1/2"/ⁿ
Cargo depth -36 1/2"
Cargo width-52"
Cargo height -34 1/2" or 38"-the smaller measurement is for the opening and the larger for the floor to ceiling.

I think its fair to say that when you look at the measurements that they are fairly close and although the Expedition EL has less leg room from the back of the drivers seat to the front of the seat it is still adequate for me and I am 6' tall. Again each SUV has it's purpose and if you have a need for a diesel and are pulling well then maybe the Excursion is best for you , and if all you need is a SUV for toting the family and occasional hauling then you can get away with the Expedition EL. I don't want to get into too many specifics because we all know there are vast differences in chassis's,engines, transmissions, and suspension. I hope this helps if anyone is interested in the differences of the two.

Great comparison, thanks. I had wondered how close they really were.

Good post....thanks for taking the time to do that! Are the measurements between the second row and front seat with the front seat all the way back?

Thanks for that. I have been looking for another family hauler for the wife and I told her she may just end up with a V10 Ex. After seeing your measurements, an EL may be just as good for her amd most likely better mileage.

I think if frequent heavy towing duties aren't in your future, the EL is a great machine. Way more comfortable day to day.

One more measurement I took on the Expy today was back of the front seat to rear of the cargo area is 100". I don't have the Excursion measurement, I forgot to take it before I traded it.

I had an 08 EL before buying my 04 Excursion and I can tell you that the Ex FEELS a lot bigger. The only thing I really liked about the EL was the power lay flat seats and the spare tire under the truck.

Yes measurements were for 4x4s. I agree the Excursion does seem larger but then again they have different characteristics all around and needs.
