electrical problems

hello all, im new to the sight so thanks for having me. i have a 2010 explorer that i am out of ideas on. i bought it with a lot of the lights, ie tire pressure, skid control, abs, service engine, air bag, service rcs and some others on and these systems are not working. a module was missing associated to the AWD system, i have put one in but awd still does not work through the 4 high and 4 low work. the automatic door locks does not lock when the vehicle starts moving. some of the lights on the dash and doors don't work either. any ideas?

Sounds to me like you should take some of the money that you hopefully saved by buying this basketcase and invest in a good, professional-grade scan tool that will help you diagnose and potentially reprogram replacement modules.

Do you have any history on the vehicle to understand if this was a prior salvage due to a flood or otherwise?

Just throwing out ideas here based on experience on my Toyota, which is "highly integrated". I've had multiple lights come on from a common cause. My trailer hitch scraped on my driveway and shorted the wires, which took out the brake light fuse. This cause traction control/vehicle stabilty, ABS and the brake lights to all come on. Initially, I didn't know the hitch wires were shorted and started troubleshooting per the shop manual, which didn't cover having all 3 lights on at once. I found the shorted hitch wires and then noticed the brake lights out so I figured I should start with the easy stuff first. Replaced the fuse and all three lights went out.

On another occasion, I had check engine, VSC and one other light come one after replacing an oil line to the head. Evidently, I didn't prime the oil system well enough and the VVT didn't respond soon enough after startup. Turned the engine off, disconnected the battery and restarted and all three lights cleared.

In your case, I would check all fuses. Also, ABS, skid control and AWD all depend on speed sensors so check your wheelspeed sensors. If you have a bearing assembly with a speed sensor in it, a worn bearing can take out a speed sensor. So, make sure your bearings aren't worn before replacing just a bad sensor. The end of the sensor will be smeared/worn if the sensing element has contacted the gear.

Other common causes could be a shared ground or other wire. You should get yourself the electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual (EVTM).
