Can anyone identify what these holes on my hood were for?

Hello,

Recently purchased a 1977 F-250 351m/C6/2WD and it is in pretty great original shape for the Pacific Northwest. No body rust, interior is super clean. I am perplexed what these holes are on the hood though. Almost look like there were side view mirrors like the old british cars, or perhaps the hood ornament that was a dealer option?

Any info would be appreciated. They are on both sides and the front corners of the hood. No center ornament though.

The first thing that came to my mind was mirrors. My Dad had them on one of his trucks like that when I was a kid.

if not mirrors maybe after-market running lights, they were popular and that far forward on the hood, more likely to my mind. Mirrors that far forward are almost useless - look cool on little Brit cars but the field of view sucks.

X3 on type 5 mirror too. Although I can't see why the hell anyone would put them there.......LOL If it were running lights of some sort, there would probably be a 3rd hole for the wiring.

This hood ornament is: B7A-16850-A = 1957 Ford Passenger Cars.

It's being sold by repro parts sellers for these trucks, but it was not factory or dealer installed because it's illegal.

In the mid 1960's, the US Gov't said that hood ornaments had to be spring loaded, so if they came in contact with something, would fold.

Some 1973/79 F100/350's came with hood ornaments, these are reproduced and all are spring loaded.

The holes are for passenger car type mirrors, you can see the outline of the mirror base.

What type of marker lamp has a base like this? None.

Another vote for mirrors. If it were lights, where would the wires have ran? I see the two holes per side for mounting but nothing for the wiring.

Must have been installed by a prior owner..notice how the angle they are mounted at seems to vary from side to side? Interesting question, though, regardless of whatever used to be there.
