2001 Exxplorer Parts Interchange
OK, Explorer gurus.......I normally hang out over in the 73-79 and OBS forums. I need some info on Explorers now......My neice has a 2001 4 door XLS (I think that's what it was) It is a 4.0 and automatic trans. On Friday she rolled it over on it's drivers side when she lost control on the icy roads. It has a good running engine and a good solid transmission in it. The body is just too messed up now to warrant repairing it. It has about 200,000 miles on it but still ran good. It used to belong to my wife and I until I sold it to her so I know a lot of the maintenance history on it. Would have driven it anywhere up until Friday. My Question is: What years would the drivetrain (or portions thereof) interchange? Im sure the engine could be used in anything with a 4.0 by swapping some parts around. I'm not so sure about the trans. If you have any input on what I want to know........I'm willing to learn.....The actual swapping of parts isn't the problem for me......just the knowledge of what will interchange so we can start trying to find her something that we can use these parts in. Even info on being able to use any of this in a Ranger would be helpful.....she wouldn't mind a Ranger, Thanks in advance......

Play around with the parts searches on https://www.hollanderparts.com/
Plug in your make, model, year and search on your part type. It returns makes/models/years that interchange for the part in question. The search results are based on the Hollander Interchange. Out where I live, the main branch of the public library has hard copies of Hollander Interchange. Most junkyards (I mean "auto recyclers") will have a Hollander Interchange or something similar.
The only downfall is that Hollander Interchange will only tell you if a certain part number was used on a certain model(s) and what years it was used. It won't tell you what parts from other models will physically fit and function, except if the exact same part number is used across those models. For example, it won't show that seats from a '95 Ranger fit my '97 Aerostar, because the exact same part numbers weren't used on both models. But, I have indeed used Ranger seats in my Aerostar. Seats from Mustangs, Escorts, Rangers, Explorers, Aerostars and other Ford models will fit on the same seat rails (depending on the year) but you might need to tap an existing hole in the seat frame. So, for some things, you have to go to the junkyard and do some trial and error.

Well, it's not exactly Hollander, but it's the next best thing. That search will only tell you which yards have parts from another make/model/year if the junkyards have it. So, if you search the yards in your area and they don't have a lot of trucks in the yard, then it might not return all of the possibilities. Not sure where in Ideeho you are, but you might want to check out Spalding's (Spaulding's?) in Spokane Valley, Warshington. I think they may have had a search function that returned results from other trucks that had parts that would interchange.
