Agree with twigs.
170,000 is not bad as far as internals. If you disagree, get a compression and leak down test.
Contrarily, I agree that stuff is worn down- you could probably feel the difference between it now/ the feel of a new a new long block. There's just a ton of 200,000+ mile guys on here that are running strong. Mine has 286K, and it's very strong. I do feel like it's a bit weaker than 3.5 years ago (when it had 113,500, but I've done almost zero maintenance. I truly believe my spark plugs are factory original. I have straight pipes instead of catalytic converters. 6 of My exhaust studs are broken and leak.
I recommend focus you time/treasure on everything around it.
Spark plugs and boots
catalytic converters
motor mounts
exhaust manifold studs
fuel pump and relay
steering/suspension/brakes
transmission flush
lots of good ways to spend your money that are more wise than engine rebuild.

I agree that you are only about halfway-ish to the engine's rebuild cycle if it's been properly maintained. Is it giving you some sort of troubles that has you looking at a rebuild now?
$3200 for a regear is the highest price that I have seen mentioned here, were there other upgrades like locker(s) done at the same time? Back when I was shopping a 3.73 to 4.88 regear for my EX I was getting quotes between $2000 and $2400 for complete 2 axle rebuilds with new gears and bearings from a few shops. What ratio did you go from and too with the regear and what size tires are you running?

My 6.8 went south at 143k, don't know why or what happened, it just locked up. Yes, I towed heavy for about half of those milesbut I was diligent in my maintenance. Stuff happens, so I decided to get the Ford reman crate engine. $7500 included labor and it came with a 3 year unlimited miles warranty. It wasn't much of a decision for me since I had my '08 outfitted with a lot of accessories. I still love my truck and it still turns heads.

Thanks for the replies guys. No real reason besides my own OCD to be thinking about rebuilding it. I take as good care of it as I can. It was an ex dea enforcemt truck before me so I imagine the same then. The 3200 was for full axle rebuilds as well as new hubs and g2 covers front and rear. Plus I had it done at 4 wheel parts and they are never cheap. But it gets done right. The first time. I'm just a guy who can't leave things alone. It already has full 5 star tuning, dual 4" exhaust custom intake and now the gearing. For sure isn't slow.

These V10's just keep going with good maintenance. Speaking of that, have all your fluids beyond the axles, been changed? Any undercarriage rust issues need attention? Steering hoses, box? Driveline? Suspension? Seat cushions? Here's a good thread for you...https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...excursion.html
