I have a 2006 f250 with the 5.4 3v and the driver side cam phaser is starting to make the knocking noise I guess you could call it, while the passenger side one is still quiet in comparison. I was wondering how long till I should replace them, I've heard people just living with the noise till 327,000 miles and other people who had it last until 70k miles and the engine blew. I was wondering if this is something I can put off or should be done asap.

 

The noise being produce by the phaser is caused by the whole valve terrain starving for oil which is not good i suggest to get it fix before you damake your cam shaft and head.

 

The noise hasn't been getting worse and isnt nearly as bad as the video of the noise I've seen. Is there any temporary solution to this? I'm currently in college and I'm not exactly rolling in cash

 

You could remove the VCT solenoid and inspect to see if theres any gunk allowing it to loose oil pressure.

 

I'll try that tomorrow, I tend to be early on oil changes rather than late so I doubt but anything is possible thank you
